The Greatest Irish Sportsperson Ever!

He was amazing.

Remember that tackle?
haha I fucking love that hit.

I've disliked O'Driscoll ever since I read his book after the last tour, but I've warmed to him this season because there was a much harder edge to him this season.

I love it when you see the big mans legs wobble once he's managed to get up.

After watching BOD for club, country and the B&I Lions last season, it's hard not to respect the man.

They. Fucking. Lost.

Well this recent series proves BOD wrong.
They. Fucking. Lost.
It was a very close series, probably the tightest of the last 3, so much for it getting tougher each time around! This SA team is arguably the strongest of the 3 teams we've played against in recent years as well.

Yeah you're right! I'm sure that loads of the 50000+ fans that went and supported the Lions on tour will not want to go next time around. It was a classic series of top quality rugby yes, but we lost so whats the point hey?

Exactly, they lost.
You said BOD was proved wrong, he wasn't.
It doesn't it matter how close it was.

So now your saying that SA are best teams of all time?
Well that is the point isn't it? Do you want them to assemble the finest players from Ireland and the UK so they can play someone shit?
What would be the point of that?

As usual, you keep disregarding the points I am making.
First you say BOD was wrong, then when I prove you wrong you revert to going on about the standard of Rugby, which by the way I have never disputed with you or anyone.

BOD stated that it's getting tougher and tougher for the Lions , it's not.

Look at the last three tours and you'll see that this B&I Lions team have done better than the previous two. Yes they lost but this SA side and the Kiwi side before them are two of the best sides to have played international rugby (fact). The Lions would have smashed the current Aussie side and in all probability they would have taken apart the kiwi's too, so don't come all this shite that the Lions will continue to struggle on these tours. They've just come up against two great sides on recent trips.

Your point about the Lions support dissapearing in the next decade is pure crap (Thats 2 tours that once again will be sell outs with half the crowd wearing red shirts) . The Lions team is and will remain the best supported rugby side on the planet.

If it's so difficult for a Lions "scratch" team to perform well in the modern era, then please explain how they managed to produce some of the best rugby played by any B&I sides?

Who said anything about performing well? No one. Again you see what you wanna see.
BOD said it will be tougher to WIN. Read the fucking thing correctly and you will see that.
That point alone makes most a mockery of your last post.

And why are the Lions coming up against these supreme teams? Because as the professional game continues to grow, the players continue to get fitter, more skillful, technically better. You say that the Lions played 2 of the best teams ever, I agree. But these teams are only going to continue to improve. Coaching is now professional too and these countries are going to be grooming these kids younger and younger.

Anyway, I'm done talking to you about this because you are seeing what you want to see and replying to it.

Hey i just think you're speaking crap Stu, thats all.

Your original point about the Lions becoming less important over the next decade is just simply wrong.

BOD: "Yeah, more and more difficult"

Does that not imply that each series is getting increasingly difficult to win?

If so then please explain the last 3 series scorelines.

2-1, 3-0 and 2-1.

The All Blacks have gone backwards and the Aussies have been weak for years.

In fairness, Rafa, in a best of 3, you can only lose it one of two ways... 🙂

And didn't we lose the first two this time around, effectively making the 3rd game a non-entity?

You can tie in rugby (ask ROG about that).

No mate it was not a nonentity. The game was played with a ferocious intensity (just like the previous 2 had been)

Did we play their best starting 15?

They had a few of injuries and 2 suspensions, but we had an equal amount of players missing due to injuries also.
The manner in which SA have destroyed all around them in the Tri-Nations only emphasises how good the Lions were. NZ and the Aussies have been like schoolboys by comparison.
Well, apart from the last game when Australia beat them.

Whilst not a RU man, the Lions are going from strength to strength, whether they win or not is partly irrelevant, it's the competition (and the reputation) that matters. The Aus, NZ & SA public want to see their team against England or the Lions. England aren't as good as Ireland, Wales or France but no-one is interested in watching those teams (sorry, but its true). Its England and the Lions they want.

As for the thread topic, George Best.

Would all those voting for George Best please stop. As a British passport holder he fails Ross's Irish test.

No it's not that - if he had taken an award as a subject of the Queen like Willie John did then he couldn't be considered Irish.

What a crock of shite. It already says on his passport he's a subject of the Queen, so just because he receives an award it changes things? The compilers of the list clearly didn't work along your rather flawed lines of thinking. Joey Dunlop had an OBE.

Hey i just think you're speaking crap Stu, thats all.
In your opinion. I foresee that the Lions will continue to lose their tours because of the points that BOD has outlined.
Any team that continually loses eventually looses support. That is just the way it goes.
So they can half fill a stadium and everyone wears the jersey, that makes them the best supported team in rugby?
What about all the boozers in Ireland & The UK that are packed for the games, will they still be packed?
I don't think they will. Will Sky continue to hand over cash for the rights for it? Will they continue to make such a fanfare when the tours roll around? Again, I can see it dwindling. I'm not asking these questions expecting you or anyone to answer these questions. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions Organisation are not asking these questions themselves.

But Rafa, isn't that because they're an All-Star team picked from 4 seperate countries? They have a potential fan base of approx 80 million or so, no?

Not disputing you that their support will always be there, by the way, but rather the reasons behind why that is...

I wouldn't argue that that isn't a big contributing factor mate, but their is also something rather special about the Lions that helps them to attract such huge support.

For example if the same was done on the football front, i doubt that the same feeling would be produced.
