The Italian stallion

I think if Slot really pushes for another winger, it means his time is up.
If everyone is fit, this would be our subs bench right now:

Mama, Bradley, Gomez, Endo, Jones, Szobo, Chiesa

If we sign, Isak who'd be left out of the match day squad? (if everyone is fit that is, yeah it never happens...still)

Putting aside his purple patches of form, it feels to me that Jones is most at risk. He is a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none - he doesn't offer anything unique or enough of anything unique.

Depends on the opposition, but I imagine it'll be gakpo missing out more often than not, as I really believe Ekitike will be pushed left. Not true winger, as kerkez overlaps help there, but absolutely left sided forward.

Edit: oh the squad! I could see it being chiesa

Friday's goal aside, Chiesa had done nothing in a Liverpool shirt to merit the adulation he gets.
He seems like a really nice lad but song aside there really are no compelling reasons to keep him.
If he does stay I hope he recaptures the form he had prior to his injury but I am not hopeful.
Cracking song though.
Almost worth keeping him for that.

Stop making sense

Chiesa had decent post-injury form for Juventus didn't he? I think the best reason to keep him is that even if we do sign Isak we're still short at least one forward and he wouldn't raise much of a fee.

I'd be equally happy keeping Elliott tbh but I guess it depends on the club's finances and what the players want.

I don't want to write off Chiesa until we actually start him in PL games with our strongest XI around him and then see what he is made of. I have little interest in anyone who still references Plymouth - because absolutely everyone was terrible in that away game to a minnow who played like it was their cup final.

We need to truly see what he's about and that isn't super sub moments and that certainly also isn't playing with makeshift teams in the cup. Everything else feels a bit pointless.

this is it unfortunately, i’d love him to be fantastic and the player he once was but nothing has changed. i think slot is being pragmatic with him, he’s proving tough to sell so let’s see what we can get out of him.

I dunno how anyone can have much of an opinion of him because we've hardly seen him play. I do think it's weird that he's got so many club, national and personal honours and he's only worth about fifty quid. He won us three points at the weekend, I'm sure he'll do it again if we keep him and play him, so I don't see why we should sell him for a low fee when he's been serie a player of the season etc.

Is he the player he was? No, and he's not going to be again. But is he a player who can help us in a season with such a packed schedule? Yes.

Keep.

Chiesa had one in three goals in his post-ACL season injury last year with Juventus. He may not have had a good pre-season, but he also never needed a full season of nursing back. He played 33 games. I found last year extremely weird. I'm purely speculating, but I'm far from convinced Slot ever wanted him, and the refusal to use Chiesa smacks more of a power play than anything else. Post December, the talk about 'building fitness' was pure gaslighting. I'm not apportioning blame anywhere; rather that something doesn't add up.

As for this season, I've said it before, if he's going to stay and Slot is willing to use him, then he's best playing centrally in the last 15-25 minutes when we need a goal. He's the most Jota- like player we have in that he can run with the ball, is two-footed and can finish. Sadly, I don't think he will handle it on the flanks in the Premier League, but that's not to say he doesn't have a use. The few things he's shown in his time here is a) he gets shots off on target with either foot, he can make a yard for himself, and there's a poacher's instinct about him. That's the starting point we need to be working with. If he proves more than that, then happy days. If Slot isn't going to use him, then cut loose.

Agreed. I still want to sell him and bring in a young explosive LW (Fofana).

Right now, we're playing Chiesa as a CF, probably because he's got good technique in and around the box, but has no explosive pace for the wings anymore. If we sign Isak, we don't need him as a CF option anymore, but we'll still need a rotation option out wide.

Not sure if I'm missing some context or misunderstanding your question, but ... the Premier League has 9 subs on the bench.

So the bench mob would be::
> Mama, Bradley, Robertson, Gomez, Endo, Jones, Szobo, Ngumoha/Nyoni, Chiesa

With Isak joining, the Ngumoha/Nyoni spot is the one given up. Of course, it could also be retained and Chiesa's spot is taken instead by whoever drops out of the starting lineup.

edit: Add another winger on top of Isak, and yes, Chiesa's slot would be the next one to go... but it might also be Endo's position (less likely, for balance reasons).

i did hear previously that slot has informed both nyoni and endo that the former is higher in the pecking order now. so endo could well be the man dropping out.

not sure how true that info is and i don’t think i agree with it. certainly didn’t happen on friday.

You're right, I can't believe I missed that we can have 9 subs

Chiesa staying will only be to add numbers to the squad. At this point its probably okay as well given how light we are.
He's had a year to settle and the goal on Friday might kick start something. Or not.
But for now just keep him. Lovely song though. And wife.

I'm doubling down on my shit, especially after squiggles comparison to Jota. I hadn't thought of that but we absolutely do need a new game changer with fifteen minutes to go.

You don't win player of the entire league, and be pivotal in winning the euros if you're an average footballer. Yes he's had an injury but he looks ready for action to me. And no it's not every day someone scores a last gasp winner at the kop end. I'd only sell if it was for shitloads and we had someone better in mind. But I'm not the spreadsheets lads and I'm not Slot.

I'll caveat all this by saying I wouldn't be comfortable with him suddenly replacing Salah in the starting eleven or anything like that. I don't know enough about him and I'm not massively confident in him, I just think there's something there, and that something at it's best is the very best, with the receipts to show for it, so we should persevere.

Also, the issue we've always had with Italians has been temperament. Well that's not a problem is it? He's been chill as fuck and delivered when required.

He still looks off. The foul that Iraola was unhappy about in the middle of the pitch, he just crumbled under a light challenge and frails his arms around desperately hoping for a foul. It just feels like he can't handle any sort of physicality from the opponents.

The lad looks up for it and has an eye for goal. If he's regained his fitness as it appears he has then use him to advantage. Plus he's got a boss song. Clincher.

A few grumblings about Chiesas song.. that its too close to the bone in regards to Heysel.

In particular "Crying in Turin" and "Fuck off Juve".

Rival fans are going to start stirring the pot. Ugh. Why do people have to look for underlying meanings in everything...
