The new number 9…

Jota is done. I love him, but his performances have fallen off a cliff. We need to recycle the squad in places it isn't up to scratch and he is someone who still has some level of resale value that we should upgrade
I agree, but for me the priority is still getting rid of Nunez. Jota hanging around doesn't really bother me that much.

Hasn't had a good season, but gave us a few good moments. Saved our asses on more than one occasion.

Palace winner
Fulham equaliser
Forest equaliser
Everton winner

That's basically all the goals he scored 🤣
Maybe if he wasn’t so shit we wouldn’t have been in trouble most of those games.

I haven't seen a single striker target who doesn't have some serious objection attached to him. Even Isak has his injury problems and age against him. Unless the club manages to unearth some gem from South America or somewhere, then we're going to have to pick our poison.

The only viable alternative I can think of would be to just deliberately sign a substandard placeholder like David, accept that would be a weak point in the team, and spend the money elsewhere.
This guy:

Probably the next in the line of the short stocky great South American striker. Still in his development phase though, but I think you'll really see him explode over the next 2 years

I think we’re only making 3 signings this summer - CF, LB & RB, with Nunez, Trent & Tsimikas leaving.

Only one of those I’d consider a first team regular.

If we can squeeze a fourth player it’ll likely be a CB.

The caveat to that is if we get massive offers for Quanash, Harvey, Jota and Diaz and then use that to fund a replacement - but I wouldn’t even be certain that replacement would come in this window and I don’t think we’d let more than 2 leave in the same window.

Like if we got a £40m offer for Quansah and used that to buy Huijsen, that’s probably as close to a no-brainer.l as you can get.

i think @peterhague is spot on when he says we need to keep churn to a minimum - the more we change the greater the risk of drop off because aside from Virgil & Mo (given we all expect Robbo to step back a bit), the backbone of the team is in prime years.

I’m a big believer in getting the right player in regardless of the cost - as long as the numbers stack up - and our finances look like we can afford £200m in transfers and 3 players in the £100-£150 wage range.

Like - if we absolutely think Alvarez is “the one” - we know he can perform in the PL, if he wants to come and Atletico say £120m - just fucking pay it, use Nunez to bring the cost down or flog him to Saudi for as much as we can and have Jota sit on the bench.

The cost doesn’t concern me - the quality of the player does.

We’ll target, like we always do, players aged 21-25 that have more than one seasons worth of data showing good performances in decent league.

I think the same. I feel we will go all in for Alvarez. We were ready to pay 100 million plus for Caicedo. So, it's not beyond our reach to go a bit more for a striker who can play in a fluid front three, has PL experience and two feet. He will have a point to prove to City, and that needle will always help. I feel we will go in for an LB over an RB, though. I feel Jota and Diaz will stay unless we get a massive Saudi bid, particularly for Jota.

Diaz is on dirt-cheap wages for his profile, and he will be in his 30s by the time this contract ends. So we are better off letting him go for free. I know his dad has been publicly pining for Barca, but I don't see Barcelona needing another winger now. But who knows, stranger things have happened.

I wouldn't be surprised if we took a couple of opportunistic Calvin Ramsay-style punts to cover homegrown needs and add more bodies to the squad.

Exactly this.

Is it a coincidence that the two titles we have won in recent years came on the back of very quiet summer transfer windows (and the associated meltdowns)?

Obviously building from a position of strength is sensible, and we do need to add to the squad, but too much churn will not help our chances next season

The bottom two interest me the most though JD on a free is hard to say no to.

There’s a rumour that J David is the player spotted going into Liverpool’s official tailor on Wednesday which was followed up by a random tweet by a Liverpool based estate agent saying he had a good chat with a new signing at the exact same place about sorting some digs.

I saw the vid, that was not Jonathan David

So what is your opinion on who he plays in MF and tackles rotation? CJ has to be managed, I can't imagine Endo getting more game time and we know he doesn't favour Morton or Elliott

Up to Elliot to out on the work to change Slots mind to be trusted more to rotate with Dom.

Up to Badger to put the work in to show he can be trusted to rotate with Gravy if needed.

Mac & Curtis will already rotate and can drop into either the defensive or attacking role as required too.

If neither Harvey or Badger aren’t showing enough or a big offer comes in, then they’ll probably be moved on and a replacement brought in - although maybe not immediately.

Again - 3 or 4 new players with 1 or 2 starting and the remainder filling out the squad is ideal.

On your 1 to 2 starting, we play with 3 up front, and Nunez moving on who should be occupying the #9 role (the new #9 or someone else)? Jota will get injured so the #9 should not be a bench open but a starter, and Jota as the squad option, would you agree?
LB recruit has to be a starter, as Robbo has shown he doesn't have the legs.
Then we goto RB, Conor is 1st choice but for how long as he is likely to get injured and the sqaud option you bring is likely to play more games than Conor as result, so in my view he has to be able to compete withe Conor in terms of ability

If we sign an Isak or Alveraz, then they’re the starter with Jota dropping to the bench.

If we sign an Ekitike or a Sesko, then they probably start on the bench if Jota’s fit at the start of the season - until they get their chance - which won’t be long, probably.

Diaz or Gakpo & Mo start.

The LB, let’s say Kerkez, probably starts on the bench with Robbo tge starting LB, with a view to Kerkez taking over at sone point in the season.

At RB, Bradley starts as RB and whoever we sign has to bide their time bc-let’s say Frimpong or Vanderson.

Ali, Virgil & Big Ibou also start - midfield picks itself Gravy, Mac & Dom.

In other words all 3 are starters, as both Jota and Conor will get injured within 5 matches. So who ever the replacements are, they have to be of Jota's qnd Conor's level

There wouldn’t be much point in signing players that are below the quality of players we already have, if that’s what your suggesting.

I’ll be say again, nonissue with us splashing a record fee to get the striker we want if it’s Alveraz or Isak.

The RB has to be good enough to be a starter even if Bradley gets first crack at establishing himself as the first choice RB.

The LB has to be the long term replacement for Robbo and we can give the player time to settle.
