The new number 9…

If we are trying to get Wirtz, perhaps he would be the new number 9. Of the false variety.
Every chance. I still worry about how clinical we would be however, so I'd still like a decent 9 coming in, even if it's the backup

Is it just me or does the current crop of attackers in football seem a bit shit on the whole?

During CL semi-finals the other week the commentators were going on about the Ballon d'Or and yeah, the likes of Raphina and Dembele are good players who have had very good seasons, but Ballon d'Or? Really?

It feels like most top teams are in need of a top class striker / forward and are struggling for options.

I believe the Messi-Ronaldo era have completely skewed up everyone’s notion of a great attacker. I also wonder if due to youtube and the proliferation of streaming services, the mystique associated with some of the top strikers or for that matter any player playing in other leagues have gone down.

Even with those caveats, we are in a rut with respect to gifted attackers.

The loss of the mystique is something I've talked about a lot with friends. Previously we used to only see these talked about players on late night highlights shows, infrequent international tournaments and maybe some European football. It's definitely a major contributor.

But as you said, even with caveats, we're still in a rut. Prior to Messi / C.Ronaldo, we had the likes of Ronaldo (real), Ronaldinho and Zidane.

We don't have anyone that gives you that level of excitement right now. Mbappe was meant to be the one but that's not worked out.

Yamal is the chosen one

Let alone Ronaldinho, Zidane - do we have attackers of the tier below those - Raul, Suarez, Batigol, Figo, Schevchenko?

I guess there is Mbappe, Salah, Lewandowski, Yamal.

Re Isak…

Newcastle at risk of missing out on champions league after that defeat today…but Isak missed the game with (another?) minor groin injury..

Does anyone really think we're going to sign Alvarez? I mean, he's a good player, a top player. But they signed him for £81M. They'll want £100M+ for him. Is he worth it? Could play Salah in the middle next year, Szobo on the right, bet we'd be no worse off. £100M is a lot of money.

No, I don't think we'll sign him. Good player but not worth that kind of money.

Just a good free kick and we've been linked to him, however spuriously. (Which is not to say Spurs-iously.)

I'll be honest, I just don't like the idea of us signing a player for £100 mill full stop.

It's only a matter of time before we do. I'm just a little bit skeptical that he's the one we should have.

I would have been okay with spending it on Bellingham or Caicedo but they're really the only players we've been linked to that I could have justified it.

(Yes, Bellingham is a bellend. In before someone replies to point that out.)

I think from Slot's comments, from the high profile #9s there's only two names on the list and thats Ekitike and Pedro

Because the whole business has gone mad. Look at what A.Madrid got for playing that for Felix.

Then we have a choice - we can be sensible and never spend really big on players and accept the consequences.

Using Euros rather than £ - Real, Barca, Atletico, Juve, City, Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea & PSG have all broken the €100m mark.

Bayern are just under at €95m.

So, eventually we join them or we set ascent de any delusions of being a team that dominates England or Europe and accept we’ll win something every now and then.

Besides, surely it’s about the right player rather than the amount.

It's inevitable, true.
But the right player can also be a fucking Nunez in disguise.

I agree that if we can't find anyone worth £100m, then we should get a more sensible option and spend our budget elsewhere.

Lots of cheap project strikers floating about. Go right to the bottom of the list and come back when our top choice is available.

True - but that’s were you have to trust the data nerds that weren’t keen on Nunez.

(Even though they picked Kieta).

Not much in life is certain and the complaints in past have always been too conservative and risk averse in transfers.

Just every now and then, I’d love us to act like a pissed up sailor in a whorehouse on payday.

Even if there a chance of picking up a Darwin-like clap.

Absolutely not. This is what we used to do before Klopp arrived, and it contributed to our decades as also-rans. There's a saying that "Near enough is good enough" - well, it isn't, not for Liverpool anyway.
