The new number 9…

I think we should sign a 9 who no-one else knows about for a ridiculously low fee who turns out to be brilliant.
I honestly wouldn't mind that. Do some real scouting for once. Get those players that Brighton and Bournemouth manage to find.

Yeah but Brighton & Bournemouth are trying to finish in the top half of the table not win the thing.

That’s the difference.

Nkunku could have worked for us tbh. Perfect foil for Salah and Diaz and linked attack and midfield nicely as a false 9

Let's be fair, mudryk, madueke, Neto, Sancho, etc are hardly the calibre of wide player that will help a creative 9 flourish

Then again....Germany tax is becoming more and more important in scouting

Id be content buying a big name striker this year, and some 17 year old south American with high promise, and just loaning them out for years to get experience

I've seen that Ian Graham guy interviewed and I'm pretty sure their choice was Nkunku.

Yep, Nkunku was seen as being less disruptive to the system and I'm guessing had the qualities to play a false 9 and cover LW. Nunez was seen as a true nine and he didn't have the metrics to indicate it was worth changing an entire system for him, but Klopp persisted after Nunez's performances against us in the CL seemed to cement Jurgen's thinking. He did say Nunez had been identified and he was on a list, but only Klopp seemed to have him first. It was in the Times or Athletic last year during Grahams book tour promo.

If memory serves we were tentatively linked to Isak, but Newcastle got a deal done early in the summer.

And we still end up wanting/buying their players.

Yes - after they’ve established themselves as good players in the league.

You’ve got people saying we can’t risk playing players like Quansah because he’s too young and inexperienced and in that phase where he’ll make mistakes as he learns, while bemoaning the fact that we don’t sign lots of young players who will make mistakes while they’re learning and we’d be risking things by playing them.

I’ve said this few times - our general approach is we’ll accept paying a higher fee for a more established player versus the risk of trying to develop a player and finishing lower in the league.

I’m sure the stat boffins have done a cost benefit analysis of paying lower transfer fees versus finishing lower down the league.

Some of the stories about Rodgers's time were pretty hair-raising. The one I'd completely forgotten was him trying to sign Tom Ince instead of Coutinho... ffs.

He’s probably on his way out of Chelsea, I wonder if we still see value in him if the price is right?

Yep, Benteke was also his downfall. He knew he his job was on the line was desperate for a prem proven striker to score some goals and save his ass rather than what was in the clubs long term interests. That deal should never have been signed off.

I don't think it was desperation that made him sign Benteke. Graham made clear that Rodgers wanted him every summer he was there. Brendan's problem was just that he was a terrible, TERRIBLE, judge of players.

I remember being alarmed about our targets virtually from the start. Every name linked was a red flag. Borini, Joe Allen, Clint Dempsey, Walcott, Ashley Williams. Tom Ince! Are you fucking kidding me? Tom Ince?!

Even a reasonably good player like Lallana was a pretty moronic target given we already had Coutinho. The guy was absolutely fucking hopeless in the transfer market.

Imagine watching Borini in training for 2 years while you were in charge of the Chelsea academy and thinking: "This player would really thrive in a title challenging team"

Didn't he have him on loan at Swansea in the championship as well?

Borini has to be one of the single most depressing signings I can remember. It really felt like the club was diminished, just hopelessly behind the opposition.

And I completely forgot about him trying to fund the deal for Dempsey by selling Jordan Henderson to Fulham! Can you imagine that? Hendo was about 21 and considered one of the most promising midfielders in England. We'd been lucky to sign him given where we were at the time. Dempsey was about 30 and the definition of a journeyman. Madness.

I forgot about the Swansea stint.... fucking hell.

Here a forward that I saw a few vids of and can't stop thinking about - Evann Guessand

I don't think he is an elite player like Isak or Alvarez but idf we are going down the budget/project route he'll be a great option.

all rounder, no flaws, physically perfect and the price will be about 30m. Plays as a RW atm but seems like a perfect 9. 12 goals for OGC Nice this season.

@dmishra - please review and advise?

I do think Joao Pedro might become a top class player. He's got all the attributes. He hasn't really shown it yet, though.

But if we could get him for £60m he's probably one of the better options.

I'd prefer Sesko but there's not a great deal in it. I don't think anyone is going to be fully satisfied with any nine we bring in. Initially being than Nunez and fitter than Jota will essentially be the bench mark of success, but hopefully anyone who comes in his the potential to really kick on during their time here.

I see I've had great influence on you. This is good news

Joao Pedro has all the attributes bar goalscoring so far, but the red card situations and training ground altercations are big red flags.
