He needs to touch that mutha fuckin' sign !

I always touch the equivalent area when I'm going down the stairs in my house, and I don't even have the chuffing sign there !

*feels sad he doesn't have an equivalent area to touch when going down the stairs*

Downing is an idiot. It's a ritual and it has a psychological effect which doesn't need to be called superstition.

Haha when the kids was nippers, they got taught it too on our stairs, even though we didn't have a sign there.

Once before a match on telly Shanks did it and the kids said 'Oh look, he's like us!'

It's making the other team remember where they are. As Skully said it's a psychological thing, like a placebo effect.

I'm an atheist & I don't need tradition or superstition, it's as much use as religion, & any effect it has is in the head, in exactly the same manner as people feeling relief through prayer.

so an atheist do not need superstitious belief or relief or mumble jumble unscientific boost right?

Not necessarily, there's the psychological effect. Like the all blacks doing the haka, a boxer entering the ring in a flamboyant style or it's just like the Galatasaray fans holding up the sign saying 'welcome to hell'.. Touching the This Is Anfield sign reminds the other team where they are and who they're playing against.
It's part of the 'welcoming' experience given to the other teams, just like the singing of You'll Never Walk Alone.

people really get confused about the whole 'scientific' thing. they forget that nearly everything we deal with as humans is an abstraction.

As athens said, it's not as black & white as that. Humans taking psychological solace & strengths from routine, hence why superstitions, like prayer & religious equivalents live on. Personally I think anything that detracts from the absolute truth that were all just animals that will live & then die removes some of our true sense of worth, most humans like to think they're so much greater than that & so much more important, simply cos we have the ability to think & understand more than some other animals, hence why religion exists in the first place, mans ego demands it be more important than simply part of a life cycle.

How convenient to be abstract! Since I am not an atheist, I rest my case.
i have absolutely no idea what you're on about. is english your second language? fair enough, if so.

i'd say the fact that most archaic religions venerate animals and nature to godly status flys in the face of that.

All a bit over the top. You play for Liverpool. You touch the sign.

There's not much more to it than that really.
i agree with this. not doing it is just making an unnecessary point.

Agreed.

I'd imagine not doing it is more distracting than actually touching the sign.

I even do it at my mum's house.

Needless to say, she doesn't feel the need to have a "This Is Anfield" declaration on the stairs.

So, Y1, are you touching the sign, or not ?
Friend, I am not superstitious but I believe in God. So, no I do not need to touch the sign if I am as good as any of these players.

y1 is impressively incoherent.
