Tommy Smith

People mainly remember Tommy Smith as a tough tackler, which he was. but there was so much more to his game. He could play defence-splitting passes and had a shot like a thunderbolt.

Was he comparable to Souness?

I once heard an entertaining after-lunch talk by Tommy He related a story about an away game at Nottingham Forest. At the time Forest had a speedy winger called Leighton James.

James pissed past Tommy a couple of times. Eventually Tommy collared him and told him:

"If you do that once more, I will break your fucking legs!"

Leighton James turned to the referee and said: "Did you hear what he said, ref?"

"Aye, said the referee. "if I were you, I would start cutting in from the wing."

The ol' memory must be going Portly (or maybe Smith's memory) because Leighton James never played for Forest.

I was never a huge fan of Tommy Smith's when I was a young kid because of his spat with Emlyn Hughes (who was/is my favourite ever Liverpool player). That said, Smith was a great player, hard as nails and a cracking shot on him. Funnily enough he wasn't great in the air and I can't remember him scoring a headed goal apart from that wonder goal in the '77 European Cup final.

A fantastic goal that has always stayed with me. The 1977 European Cup Final.
What a day. What a goal. What a player. Tommy Smith RIP

RIP: - Aye from what my Uncle told me he was a beast of a player. Hard as nails.

I had dinner with him once. Or lunch. In the Legends Lounge.

Well, he sat at our table anyway, and was spectacularly rude about Emlyn Hughes and growled at me for being late (although that might have been Ian St John, actually, I can't remember I was fucked)

Didn't know much about him until yesterday. Seemed like a top player, but a horrible human being. I hope we don't go over the top with our tribute to him tomorrow, especially in light of Salah's recent abuse. It will stink of incredible hypocrisy.

There will be a minutes silence before the game to commemorate the tragic events of Hillsborough, so I guess they'll combine it somehow. They will probably also emphasise that they are remembering the player not the person or something like that.

He was clearly a cunt of a man. He slagged off Liverpool signing Barnes purely on the colour of his skin, and I know who I'd prefer as a footballer and a person. He hated Emlyn Hughes. What the fuck is that about. Cunt of a man, sorry to his fans.

The bloke over here in the US who organises the annual LFC Legend tour, told me that in all of his many years working with all of the club legends, all of them were anywhere from decent to top blokes. Except Tommy smith. Said he was a horrible person.

I'm surprised it took a good 20 odd posts before someone mentioned that he was a total dickhead.
