... according to Oliver Holt in the Mirror tomorrow....

Manchester United are making a massive £60million bid for Gareth Bale.Premier League champions United want Tottenham star Bale to be the first major signing of new manager David Moyes' reign. The move for the Welshman is thought to be one of the reasons why United's vice chairman Ed Woodward is returning early from their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia.Spurs are desperate not to lose Bale, last year’s Footballer of the Year, and have so far resisted United’s approach. But the Old Trafford giants are keen to put the damaging publicity surrounding the future of Wayne Rooney behind them. They know that buying Bale - who has been linked with Real Madrid throughout the off-season - would give Moyes, his players and the United supporters a huge boost. And his arrival, as well as continued interest in Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas and at least one other high-profile signing, would soften the blow of Rooney's expected move to Chelsea.United have been quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, but sources close to the club say that is about to change. There is also continuing speculation about a mega-bid to bring former favourite Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford from Real Madrid. But the attempt to prise Bale away from Tottenham is top of the agenda, and United are prepared to smash their £30.8m transfer record to get him.Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is famous for driving a hard bargain and his brinkmanship, but United are keen to seal a deal to prise Bale out of the White Hart Lane club before the start of the season on August 17.They are aware that neighbours Manchester City have already bolstered their squad with the signings of midfielders Fernandinho and Jesus Navas and are close to recruiting forwards Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo. And United are desperate to ensure that they give Moyes complete backing as he attempts to carry on the phenomenal success his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson delivered.

not good news. real madrid need to get their finger out and match neymar's transfer by signing bale. spurs need to ensure they dont strengthen a rival. it all make sense...

If Utd think they can get Bale for £60m they're deluded. Levy will demand at least double that, because it's Utd and secondly because of the way he handled the Berbatov deal and also Modric last year.

Not that Bale is worth £60m or above

Didnt he sign a new contract with a release clause that could be triggered if they didnt get CL footy?
Utd are probably the one club he'll push for a move to join aswell.

Not surprised by the bid tbh

The story last year was Bale was giving Tottenham another season before jumping ship to Spain. I'm surprised speculation around him has been so quiet this far.

It is desperately disappointing that united rumours are about Bale, fabregas and Ronaldo whilst our rumours are about upcoming, unproven talent. It is frightening the difference 4 years makes. We seem to be so far from the team that counted superstars like Xabi Alonso, Mascherano, Torres and Gerrard (in his prime) without realising how lucky we are. Whilst we couldn't compete with the biggest 'wallets' we were very desirable as a club to join. Now we are a stepping stone.

A good life lesson if nothing else.

I think this is a leaked story from Utd to make it look like they are still competing at the top end of the transfer market, much like the continuing insistence they are trying to bring back Ronaldo. no way they will come up with the money to buy Bale, that will be 70 million to any body in England, 60m to a foreign club

If only we'd loaded more debt on to the club and focused more on commercial activities, we could be just like Utd.

Utd haven't moved yet but I reckon they're going to spend a shitload.

Can't recall them spending excessively in the last few years, a club buying Bale now would be paying absolute top dollar for him, he's a quality player but there is no value in it as such, that's not the model Utd operate on these days, its more the Real/PSG or City model. If it were any of those clubs rumoured to be offering 60 million for Bale I'd believe it but not Utd

If it is 60M, Spurs will accept it all day long.

There are few shrewder operators in football than Levy.

Which is why he won't accept their first offer, he knows Madrid have a keen interest in Bale and need to save face after missing out on Neymar. Levy will knock back the offer and see who else comes to the table, Real have much deeper pockets and he wouldnt be selling to a rival. I

Not exactly correct though. If a 'superstar' player comes along, and I suspect Bale has now grown into that moniker, then a club with proper marketing and distribution can capitalise on the name and recoup most, if not all, of a massive expenditure. The history books are full of such names/clubs esp. in Italy/Spain. United have the marketing, the distribution and the global following to easily make such an irregular expenditure seem like good business. Never mind what that investment is worth to the club if they win major competitions due to the performances of said player.

Didn't Madrid already say earlier this summer that they'd break the transfer record (i.e. go above 80m) to sign Bale, provided Bale kicks up a fuss at Spurs?
I'm sure I read their dickhead chairman saying that last month.
There's no way Spurs would accept 60m for Bale this year. If he's seen as the difference between top 6-7 and CL footy next season, which would pocket them 30-40m, selling him for 60m really wouldn't be worth it, particularly to Scum.

You are right about 'star' value and Bale is certainly on the fringe of that bracket, its the reason people are vastly over estimating Suarez value saying hes worth more than Bale, clearly he is never going to be marketable asset so his value will never be as high.

The issue with buying Bale, and I mean this specifically for Utd as i dont think it applies to City or Real, is that they haven't gone out to sign a player as a statement regardless of cost since Rooney. I don't think they operate on that model anymore. I expect if Utds bid is genuine, and I doubt it, they will try and force the issue and wrap it up before the sharks get involved. Levy will be smart enough to know that Utds offer will be neither the last or the most lucrative so I expect he will dismiss it out of hand

Took the words right out of my mouth, so to speak.

Yup. Ok, maybe a bit more. He didn't start playing until after Christmas. Over-rated as fuck.

Don't get me wrong. He's a grea player and I'd love to have him at Anfield. But he's no Coutinho.
Madrid said they were willing to pay £80m for bale and spurs have refused them, so why would they accept £20m less from manure?

And you definitely have rose tinted glasses on.

Bale is an outstanding footballer, his performances after Xmas were like Gerrard circa 04/05 season.
