Virgil Signs

Fucking take that Trent you fucking sell out.

Foreigners who are the best in their positions in the world get it more than you ever did.

What took so fucking long to get such a simple decision over the line.

Our leverage, which isn't much, is the same now as it was at the beginning of this season. Both parties will have wanted to wait and see, and then both parties will have negotiated.

Both Salah and Virgil are important, Virgil more so. Both are declining. Both are incredibly expensive. Neither will have massive resale. It made a lot of sense for us to be cautious.

Its even possible we could come to regret one of these signings, which everyone is celebrating as a no brainer.

Highest risk is Salah, but we can always sell him to Saudi next summer.

You're talking to Bino here - he thinks Hughes' job is like this:

What risk? Barring a career ending injury there is fuck all risk compared to the alternative.

What risk?

Famous last words. It's almost a 100 million in two years these players, and little chance of return.

Neither should be really playing more than 80% of the minutes they did this season. Salah has been overvalued already the last half of the season enough seasons in a row now that it's a pattern, and will be at afcon. The risk is that they continue declining and it shows even more, and that we can't afford to manage their minutes because we can't afford competitive replacements, or find a player of real quality who is guaranteed to not start much.

The van dijk one seems much less risky to me.

I'm not saying they are wrong decisions (though I suspect Salah is) but to say there is no risk is absurd.

Marketing value and off field revenue alone will make back that 100M easily even if he falls off a cliff.

The club tied itself in knots with Salah by botching the Nunez signing. Had we landed Isak instead, we’d be in a much stronger position to contemplate life without Salah. While some of this has been by design, the club has also been fortunate that Salah has consistently found ways to maintain/increase his goal involvements. But that continued dependency has to change. We need to start shifting away from it, and fast. I don't think his numbers will dissipate to the point that he isn't worth one of highest wages in the league, but more that there is only two proper windows in which we can bring in players and get them firing before 2027 rolls around. The club have to work on the assumption he will not be here at that point. I'm hoping that the now stable backroom team will ensure back to proper planning.

VVD --

- Didn't play games in the media
- Put the club first
- Didn't give the fans negotiating heart attacks
- Didn't create drama
- Did his talking on the field
- Clearly loves the club and the fans
- Is more loyal than some scousers
- Is getting paid for his loyalty
- Great leader.
- Great communicator
- Great captain.

In an era when his peers include some real fools, we are luck to have such a strong character who is one of the best CB's in the world.

This is my issue with the people who seem to think Trent should be above criticism. Yeah he's entitled to leave if he wants, and that's fair enough, but there are better and worse ways to go about it.

I'm just guessing but, if we hadn't one either of the 2 major trophies both of the lads would have been off on their toes.

All the more reliable journos were citing that figure this morning, so as confirmed as something like that can be. He and Salah are apparently both on about that, including bonuses I think (probable bonuses?).
Guardian was suggesting his basic will be more or less the same as at present (which they believed to be £220k), but with bonuses he could get to £400k.
As I've said before, I'm always sceptical when the press publish numbers as I'm not convinced anyone would want it out in the open, although I imagine agents share information amongst themselves so they all know what the going rate is. It's not beyond the realms of fantasy that some other agent might blab, but we should always take it with a pinch of salt.
EDIT: Actual quote from the Guardian:
"His previous contact was worth £220,000 a week and he will earn a similar wage, though with performance-related bonuses his pay could reach about £400,000 a week."
