Watch him defend...

The best center backs don't get dirty, I can't remember big Sammi looking less than pristine.

Jamie on the other hand...
Great character, player and leader, but....did and was quite often required to get dirty.

I think your statement is correct. The best ones make it look easy. The good ones still get the job done with a lot more excitement.

Normally these charts are best avoided for Centre Backs..

However.. for Virgil Van Dijk... [emoji33]

We need to buy a CB who is strong in PAdj tackles - that has been blatantly obvious for months now

WTF is a PAdj tackle?????
PAdj Defensive Stats – Stands for Possession-Adjusted. Essentially, the problem with defensive rate stats is that you can’t make a tackle, interception, etc when your team has the ball. Thus teams that have a lot of the ball will have under-represented defensive output compared to a team with low possession. These types of stats attempt to adjust for opportunity, but as of June 30, 2014 are very new and still in development.

Wow.... just wow....

He's gone up a gear or 2 even since he has been with us tbf.

If we can win stuff he will be up there with the greats of this club.
I know what you mean in terms of his status = trophies, but in terms of ability alone, is he the best CB we’ve ever had?
Certainly in the last three decades for me, but where does he rank with the likes of Hansen?

Thats the thing isn't it ? We have been blessed with so many great players over the years and it pisses me off that so many have played and / or left us because of our failure to win the title and compete at the highest level consistently. I still feel like puking up knowing Steven Gerrard never won a title with us and all his peers from United and Chelsea did. Fucking hell !!!

Would love someone to do a side by side of the Sissoko chance versus Salah’s goal. Very similar defending.

they did talk about this in the post-match, certain aspects were different, they said the defender should have maybe stopped earlier, but Salah is easily more capable than Sissoko, but it seems like the goal-keeper was slightly at fault for coming out to far.

When people talk about paying money just to see an individual they usually reference attacking players or midfield maestros, how many central defenders can you say that about? The way he makes it look easy is the impressive part.

Sky quote : - With the chart below in mind, it should be no great surprise Van Dijk is a certainty to make the PFA team of the year and the odds-on favourite to take the individual prize too.

I've seen them all since the Shankly days inclusive and I'd say Virgil has the most comprehensive skill set of the lot, as he's far better in the air than Jocky and quicker over more than ten yards (contrary to popular preconception Jocky was rapid over the first ten or so when he needed to be). He's got to keep it up for seasons on end like Jocky did to rank as high as Jocky does, and up till now I've always picked Jocky and Lawrenson as the CB combo for the All-Time XI (even big Sami wouldn't split those two for me). However, if Virgil keeps on the way he's going, Lawrenson's going to find himself on the bench one day.
