I hope that one good thing that will come out of Firmino's untimely knock is that Mane will used more often by Klopp as a centre-forward. When I saw Origi's name on the team-sheet, I thought it would be another game where the front 3 struggles to string moves together, with Origi's poor hold-up and combination game exacerbating Mane's and Salah's recently erratic passing. But Klopp found a good solution – by sticking Mane up front he avoided making Origi the focal point and took advantage of Sadio's predatory instincts in the box. If you think about it, in addition to speed he has lot of great "pure" centre-forward qualities, like being able to receive and protect the ball with his back to goal, turn in any direction in a tight space and strike the ball well off balance. Even when his first touch is erratic, his quick thinking can turn it into an advantage, like he did with the 2nd goal. I also saw a stat a while back that he was our 2nd best player in aerial duels after Van Dijk.

Another benefit of sticking Mane up front is that he doesn't have to pass the ball too often – and when he does it's a short pass or a one-two, something he is pretty good at unlike the visionary "eye of the needle" passes required of a typical #10. Given all this, I'm surprised Klopp hasn't played him as a striker more often and now that he's proven he can do it I could also see it working even when Firmino is back in a 4-2-3-1, like this:

--------------Mane-------------
Origi/Ox--Firmino-----Salah

We should also give credit to Milner. People started almost giving up on him after a wretched performance at RB against United – and sure, Trent came in and showed exactly why he is the first-choice right-back – but Milner also shut up his critics today. He set the tone for the game with his energy and I think his ability to find space as an attacker is under-appreciated – someone like Thomas Muller has a reputation as an expert at finding space ("raumdeuter" as he called himself in an interview) but honestly Milner is every bit as good at this. He always makes an extra couple of steps to make sure he is ready to receive the ball in space and he made our sputtering attack run smoothly in this game – but also roared back destroying anything in his path whenever the ball was lost. Vintage Milly!

Well done Origi; he worked his arse off to get back and defend every time and provided a goal threat from the wing, even produced a couple of nice switches to the RW – Salah definitely appreciated those! Still seemed not too sure what to do when the ball was at his feet, but that can improve with confidence and rhythm. He is making a decent case to be our 4th-choice attacker, at least until Ox comes back.

The good news is Mane has always been a bit of a streaky striker...before he joined us it was certainly the case...so hopefully he can go on a bit of a scoring run now.

Hes got 6 goals in the last 6 league games, hes been in phenomenal form recently. For some reason its gone largely un noticed.

The pre-match thread after the team announcement was funny reading! ‘Klopp’s getting conservative.’ ‘Draw’. ‘Shit team’. Etc

Mane and Salah were great today. TAA is back in form right when we need him to be. Brilliant crosses and runs. Well done boys!

Give Everton a beating and it's on again.

TAA is vital to how we play.

Origi is another player who can go from shite to unplayable almost when his confidence is up.

This might be a catalyst for him. Score another against Everton and it could be a timely boost.

I thought Origi was good. Didn't start too well with some heavy touches but grew into the game. It's good to know there is still some fight in him. Hopefully he will continue to destroy Everton after they broke him when he was at his best.

TAA was brilliant. The crosses were Gerrard-esque.

I thought Matip was very good as well. He showed timely aggression which I didn't know he had.

I love that the team seems to have as much pride in keeping a clean sheet as oppose to scoring. The focus was spot on despite our big lead.

We seem to be getting some zip back into our plays after some lacklustre performances. Let's hope we persist in the tempo till the end.

The only real dilemma now is do we go with Origi or Firmino against Everton. Origi is strong works hard and he played well but his limitations are well established at this point. Hes not great technique wise and hes far from clinical in front of goal.

On the other hand Firmino has been very flat lately and the atmosphere at Goodison will be feral, not a game for a player who is operating at less than 100% as I expect they would target him physically. Theres alot of big games still to go and its not worth Firmino risking aggravating his ankle.

Im leaning towards Origi, that was one of our best performances this season. No reason to change a winning side unless somebody is injured.

I'd like to see Mane up top again. It looks really exciting and he does a better job of it than Salah. Mane is a lot more unpredictable, has a stronger frame, is better in a crowded box and in the air.

I like Firmino, but there's hard to deny his inconsistency and, when he's off form, he's not as important to our attack as many would have you believe. The sky doesn't fall in and we can batter teams. He shouldn't be untouchable.

Milner managed to fill Firmino's role as #10 while simultaneously defending like a proper CM. Having 3 players up top who were all mostly trying to score directly rather than combine with each other only worked because of Milner's ability to fill the double role. Well, that and the excellent service from the wings.

Really interesting to know what will happen in midfield vs Everton. Will Klopp let Milner start in 3 high-energy games in 8 days? How about Wijnaldum? From rotation standpoint, it would make sense to rest both and play Keita and Hendo.

Id be surprised if Henderson doesnt start against Everton, hes fresh after being rested and as club captain you want your leaders on the pitch in this type of game.

Liverpool 5 Watford 0: The Match Ratings

by Ben Johnson | Feb 27, 2019 | 0 comments
THAT was fucking sound that, wasn’t it?
I don’t care what you say, Big Elton is sound by me, lad. Massive rocket fella.
Alisson: 8
Nothing to do apart from looking all sound and that until he has to make a point-blank bad boy. Not being funny but they are almost impossible to defend, you know. Your lads play a belter backline, some cunt beats it with a late run but can’t score from where he is so heads it across to all the fellas who were offside to nod one in. Got to be offside that, morally. Don’t care what you say.
Trent: 10
Oh my God. Not being funny but they are some of the best balls in you will ever see in your life. A big blend of Johnny Barnes, David Beckham and Gegsi, but probably better than the three of them.
Virgil: 9
Me mate had Mane for a hat trick. Fucking made up when he went off. Virgil scores his first, he leans in, whispers I’ve still got a live one here. Got a Virgil brace. Queue mayhem. Glorious there, Virgil. Flawless. He is probably better than anyone centre half to play the game.
Joel Matip: 8
Part of a backline that had to put up with Troy Deeney being pissed off with not getting a carrot out of Virgil and trying to bully everyone else. Gave no quarter. Belter block first half with his big schooner webs.
Robbo: 8
Mad the way he set up two from full back there, and wasn’t the best full back on the pitch.
Fabinho: 9
I was in the upper Main there, and for the first time I got to see him from a high spec in the ground. His movement with and without the ball is a joy to behold. Probably the best defensive midfielder knocking about. Glorious. A thing of beauty.
Gini: 8
Filled in where needed, ticked it over, kept it, moved it, all at the right time. Takes some doing that.
Milner: 8
I seen that side and I’ll be honest I was worried about the midfield. I was worried it couldn’t create. I was worried we were set up to contain. And then Milner plays like 2014 Milner playing for City as one of the best attacking midfielders in the league.
Salah: 8
Honest to god his attitude is unbelievable. One of the best in the world, things haven’t been going for him, worked harder than anyone on the pitch. Ragged their full back, back to that “I’ll beat you inside and out ball bag” mode. Unlucky not to get a couple of goals. Saving himself for the Blueshite there.
Big Div: 8
Fella behind me spent the whole game calling him big cock. I mean, first time, it was slightly unfunny. Second time, it was slightly unfunny. Unless it wasn’t a joke, and it was a factual statement. I mean, he might have bumped into him in Crosby baths changies there, communal fuckers them, people bouncing around all over the gaff in all kinds of states of undress.
Belter finish. Did the old “I’m cutting inside. I’m shite, I’m shite, I’m shite, it’s in.” Worked his plums off, offered a threat, horrible to try and mark as a full back.
Sadio: 9
First 30 minutes, probably one of the best centre-forward performances for The Reds all season. The header is a belter, the backheel a piss take. Is he messing? Turned a front three which, in theory, with Div with his back to goal and Sadio left and Mo right, looked uninspired, to a dynamic front three.
SUBS
Lallana: 7

Come on upfront. Mad that. Did alright.
Henderson: 7
Won some tackles and that.
Keita:
Hello.

In the CL last season, Millie was quality when given a free role as he always makes runs in behind or doubles up with one of the full backs. Our problem for a lot of this season has been playing all of Millie, Hendo & Gini without clear roles which meant none of them play with freedom. A very simple change of having a clear DM/deeper CM in Fabinho is doing wonders for all three of them when they play.

I also think we can start considering that Mane is more suited to a central role than Mo - so having Origi looking comfortable on the left might be very useful in games to come. I thought he was excellent.

What a fucking performance. Hes also missed a bit that motd did catch where he missplaced a pass to Virg, Virg is robbed and half a second later Fabs wins it back again, and rather than swag his first reaction is to apologise to Virg.
It was fucking ace.

I LOVE this guy. He's a Fernandinho buster.

That was boss that. Mentioned that in the match thread, his only real fuck up, & he then got it back expertly just seconds later.

Who out of the starting 11 wasn't good last night?! Very contrasting performance to some recent one, not sure what the difference is apart from bobby going out and TTA coming in, but surely that's not it. Would love a repeat of that the weekend, just the performance.
Our next 5 league games are everton (a), burnley (h), fulham (a), spurs (h), soton (a). Really need to keep last nights level up for those.
Surely the worlds best defender, Gomez and the ox can't be far off the bench now?

I thought robbo was poor again. Any decent attacks came down his side, in particular when gray came on.

Salah was industrious but greedy as fuck

I think he’s fucked. Having Moreno as the only other left back means he has to play every minute and with the energy he gets through he must be running on empty.
Absolutely

It's no slight saying he's been poor, because poor for him is a good game for Moreno

Mane’s goals were his 13th and 14th in the league in 2018-19 - the most he has ever scored in a single season in the division.

Origi has had a direct hand in 11 goals in his last 18 Premier League starts (seven goals, four assists).
