Mr Wenger is too well respected, urbane and civilized for anyone to view that incident as anything other than him acting as sympathetically as he could to restrain the provocations of a ruffian of indistinct heritage.

The FA may well commend Mr Wenger and ask his permission to replay this incident to budding administrators as to how to maintain discipline under extreme circumstances.

I guess when he thinks the cameras will be on him snubbing another manager he can resist that normally compulsive need to depart a minute or so early. Only in England could these two clowns build up such a myth about themselves. Mourinho's attempts at 'mind games' were just laughed at in Italy and Spain; in England he's still hailed as some kind of magical figure who's mastered the dark arts. And look at this recent tosh about Wenger: 'Nicknamed “La Professeur” when he arrived at Arsenal, Wenger has the appearance of a librarian, and an intellect to match.' Yes, that's right, he's got an intellect to match that of a librarian. Because only among the boneheads of the London tabloids would they equate librarians ('Y'know, them blokes 'oo sit near loads of books all bladdy day') with towering intellects. Surprising in a way that Cantona hasn't returned to dazzle them again with his oh-la-la accent and sardine-based aphorisms.

Other referees sometimes collect more headlines, but Atkinson in his quiet way is one of the most consistently incompetent referees I've ever seen.
