So.....what went wrong?

Is Rodgers all talk and no trousers?

Did our signings do well?

What about the old guard? Did Captain Fantastic play that well?

What changes would you make to line up?

I think we should start carroll with the movement of borini and suarez around him

Will we play better against City?

finishing... I thought we had some decent chances.

If we went ahead it would have been a different match. Suarez for all his skill really needs to start finishing.

A lot of things went wrong.
First, Enrique was wasn't playing. Shouldn't have been noticeable but Kelly was terrible today.
Why did Rodgers play Suarez in the middle of the forward three. He's more comfortable on the left imo.
What happened to Gerrard?
Downing has started this season like he ended the last one. No end product at all. Nothing.

I can't be arsed mentioning everything that was wrong today but a lot of the players had a bad day on the pitch.

I'd also like to add that our team is very fragile. Agger is now suspended and I'm actually shitting bricks at the prospect of Carra replacing him. He's definitely past it.
We don't have any decent attacking options on the bench either.

The team looked a bit disjointed. That's the risk you take when you assemble the squad so close to the start of the season.
Anyway...I can't wait to see Assaidi play.

1. Same situation as last season.
2. Can't finish, heads drop when things don't go to plan.
3. Final third cross or shot still a problem.
4. Kneejerkers out in force in the OFFICIAL match thread.
5. Moron has gone full retard.

I've seen enough of Downing to know he will never be a constant enough goal threat to be in the front 3 of a 4-3-3. Also his movement isn't that good and I don't care if he can press or not. He did keep up his one good-cross-per-match ratio though.

The difference between last season and this season based on this '1' game is:

1) that we make more passes to get the same result.

2) wee cannot finish, or make the wrong decisions in the final third.

3) at times the extra passing caused a certain lazyness to develop in the defences, and overall awareness of team members. You do wonder if its not the fans that may just get bored with tiki-taka.

4) In terms of players who were poor today - you can argue that Johnson, Suarez, and Allen played well while the rest were average or below. New signing Borini hardly made an impact, not good when a new signing is not noticed.

I cannot make a full judgement call on this game, as we went down to 10 men for most of the second half - so its difficult to judge the full character of the team after going 1-0 down. Give it time is the advice.

It's all part of the dance - forgetting to scratch the shiny soles on your shoes and slipping over on your arse as soon as the music starts.

We looked ropey at the back and susceptible against counter-attacks. The same thing happened time and again last year with the opposition scoring "against the run of play". I didn't think we were that good anyway so I'm not sure how against the run of play you can call it.

The most fundamental problem is our midfield however. It was dysfunctional last season and it looked dysfunctional again today. If you can't control the game then your defence is going to come under pressure and you're going to struggle to break down teams. Lucas and Allen looked like they were in their own little worlds today and Gerrard simply wasn't at the races. West Brom seemed to find it quite easy to pass it out of defence and cut through our midfield whereas we struggled and tried to get at them by using pace on the flanks.

All summer long we've heard about tiki-taka and pressing from the front - where was that today?

Carroll would have been much better today than our front options

Suarez cannot be the spearhead. Fact.

X2.

We knew Suarez isn't clinical so, again, we just relied on hope. Who's going to score our goals??

We were tactically outplayed. We did press from the front but WBA were smart, they played the ball over our midfield.

Should we consider keeping gerrard for the "big" games? Where his experience and ability will come to the fore.

You have to wonder if Shelvey or henderson would have contributed more today

p.s. i'm glad cole is injured.

I'm pinning all my hope on Assaidi to revitalise this team.
Downing was poor today. Not poor exactly but he didn't do anything. He's a fucking wing forward, FFS!!!!

We lost because we were second best in nearly every defensive challenge. Our centre bakcs looked like they were thinking about new contracts and not football. Martin Kelly looked like just got of the plane from Ibiza and Lucas looked like he just got bsck from injury. Penalties or not, that doesnt matter now.

Off the pace, poor defensive desicions and lets not kid ourselves but a WBA that wanted it more.

Feel for Rodgers though, the next week will be brutal. Lose against City and we're on the bacfoot going into very tough games.

Cant get any worse mind..

He wasn't getting much help from kelly, and our midfield didn't help with the shite positioning.

Assaidi should play if suarez and borini can't operate behind carroll, or as an option. He shouldn't walk into the squad.

Drop downing, bring in carroll

Carroll
Suarez Borini
Gerrard
Allen
Lucas

Couldn't hurt

Henderson? Contribute? Really?

I was looking at the movement of Allen versus the rest as he's the one most familiar with the new system. His movement and passing had a pace and urgency about it that was missing from everyone else bar Suarez. The rest of the team was pedestrian in their approach. Things only chaned after we conceded. We'd be better off starting all games a goal down to be honest.

If Suarez could put the ball into the back of the net he might be the best player in the league.

But as it stands we have a magical player who creates loads of chances but couldnt throw a grape into the ocean if he was standing on the end of the Santa Monica pier.

Though Allen was good. A bright spark in a deep black hole.

Suarez should have scored a couple. Poor finishing today, lets hope he starts firing soon.

It was very slow at times.

Which is still mystifying as he seems to do it for Uruguay.
His shooting accuracy wan't great in Holland either, but it was at least a few times better than his time at Liverpool.

Suarez can't finish, there's your fucking answer.

He takes one of those first half chances and we are on the way to 3 points.

They got the first goal, crucial.

Absolutely. I was shocked by the pace of our play, especially after having seen passes being snapped around the park at pace in our last two games. Pedestrian is the word.
