Great result. That was a cup final that game, had to win it.
I like Coutinho in that deeper role, looks really good and doesn't impact his goal threat obviously off the back of that. Be interesting to see if Klopp uses him there next season and buys a striker and a wide forward instead.

Now we have that game against Middlesborough, I feel like we've taken this game for granted a bit, they're going to sit back and not try anything, we need to break them down.

Great result. Great performance. West Ham looked like holliday campers. So I assume there will be no help from anyone else that play out rivals!

They had nothing in the middle, so it worked. When Fergouli came on he was almost like Maradona waltzing through the middle unopposed.

Great game. Could have a few more goals but hey a clean sheet. We finally turned up. Bravo.

Is it too much to hope for Sunderland to take some points off Arsenal on Tuesday so the pressure is off?

Actually, yeah it is. Dammit.

Henry made a good point - this Coutinho role should only be against teams that sit back against us. Against the bigger teams, no need.
Well against bigger sides he wouldn't be playing quite the same role, despite perhaps starting in the same position on paper.

Nevertheless if he's in central mid then he is aggressive enough & works hard enough to pull it off even when playing further back, & you're guaranteed a better final ball than most central midfielders.

That's only if we have another pacy attacker ahead of him or on the wing though (perhaps two, if Mane is on the other side). Otherwise you'd want him further up the pitch.

Yes please, let me spend the last day of the season hoping we can somehow sneak 3rd, not stressing out over fourth.

I was thinking just that but then you said Sunderland. Guaranteed 3 points for the Arse.

Nah, Soton and Stoke were supposed to be 'difficult' grounds for them, and they won quite easily.
Sunderland are supposed to be an 'easy' win for them , and they'll screw up (inshallah)

Just been looking at that though, if they get a draw then we get beat, they need a high scoring win at Everton to get fourth place.

If we're behind in our game & they're on 70 points I wouldn't put it past the Everton players to start scoring own goals.

Sturridge massively alleviates the weight from coutinhos shoulders , so it would be interesting to see him start advanced in the 10 role with Sturridge in front of him but yeah Coutinho was class in the deeper roll today , makes it very difficult for a holding player to track him and most forwards will lose interest /not bother

imagine coutinho in the deeper role with mane / firmino / Lallana / insert baller here in front of him....

Man, I love reading that Sturridge did well today. Can we really find a better striker than him?

I've said many times that he should be in exactly that role .. and that he almost always plays well when he starts there. He gives our midfield momentum by doing what pretty much only Lallana can otherwise do .. go past people to break the defensive shape and cause chaos.

Coutinho in centre mid reminds me of our of our games against Everton about 3 years ago - he was incredible there and it really changed the way we played, but when we lack more creativity up top it has made sense to play him further up.

As has been said by most in recent games, by bringing more creativity and threat into the middle 3, the whole dynamic transforms:
  • The opposition have an additional player to mark/ worry about, creating more space e.g. for Gini to run into
  • We are allowing ourselves to add a player with movement up top. In this game it was studge, but imagine in the future line ups again with Can/ whoever as DM, Gini as CM 2 and Lallana or Coutinho as CM 3.. We then have Firmino, Mane, Studge, Origi, Ings etc. to make up that front three
Can looked good as DM, and without having to think about actually 'having' attacking responsibilities, he seemed a willing runner at times forward. Gini was everywhere, as he was no longer considered the danger man of the midfield 3, thus meaning the opposition were paying less attention to him.

Great result.

Random thought from me - I think we looked a different threat on West Ham's pitch as it felt / looked quite expansive. Does anyone know/ think we will adjust our dimensions of the pitch after its relaying this year? Would be interesting to know if we have scope to make it wider/ longer.

Yes - because top class strikers don't get injured time after time after time ... Unfortunately for Studge, his inability to stay healthy has ruined what could have been a fantastic career.

Well the question is who? Cause Origi isn't cutting it.

Let's just go with Studge next year!
Is that what you really want to do? If not, then the constant suggestion is just stupid.
Great finisher, right up there with Kane in term's of English talent, but he cannot stay healthy.

I'm not sure if keeping him is an option. I just don't see how we're going to find a striker that's better than him.

Listen, if he's up for it, I would keep him.
But he'd have to take a pay cut - you cannot pay him 150k/week or whatever he's on to play 1 game a month or whatever.

Thoughts:
  • It's odd, I think based on the last month & a half, I'm ok with Ming being our keeper next season. He's shown better command of his box and seems like a very good goalkeeper.
  • Matip & Lovren played well together.
  • Can played well
  • Coutinho playing behind the front 2, and Lallana/Gini always buzzing there, was too much for West Ham. Could we not have done that against Soton too
  • Studge - a few great runs. I said last week, he'd impress the last two games. Not only is he fresh, but he has a point to prove - either to us or the next club that takes a chance on him. If only he had stayed healthy.
  • Origi - shite in the 1st half, but really good 2nd half - he just finally seemed up for it. If he plays againt Boro, and he shouldn't if Bobby is healthy, I hope that continues.
  • Coutinho has 12 goals this year ... How many more goals would he, mane and us as a team have if we didn't have the injuries this season? We lack depth & anoher good CB & Keita like DM. Get that, and I'd be optimistic.
  • If we don't get an unexpected helping hand from Sunderland, Boro will be fun. The team proved something today - and they have one more cup final to prove they can take the next step up.

Yeah, & despite him coming good afterwards, that run he made was embarrassing. Anything more than ten yards & he's just too slow now. Not to mention that explosive short term pace means his impact upfront is negated a little.

He's obviously got the football brain to workaround it, or klopp has trained him to make he most of his ability without relying on pace to gain the extra yard, he rarely used to try rolling the defenders shoulder for through balls as much has did today, which means either he or the coaches know it's a way of getting that extra yard without having to beat a player for pace to earn it.

If Klopp is looking at this formation next season we will be getting a new striker in to play that role.

If it was something Klopp wanted you can bet he asked about it before the main stand was built. If so they will have left some space to make it wider there (is there a bigger gap that side does anyone know?)

I doubt we can make it longer, the gap between goals & seats at the Kop end looks big, but seems about the same distance as most stands are from the pitch nowadays, so presumably it's the fa prescribed distance.

You sir, are a masochist if you think that playing boro will be 'fun'.

This side has continually bottled it in massive games, they have continually struggled against lesser sides too, & this is, in effect, a one game playoff against a lesser side, who are already relegated so can play with all the freedom in the world, & try to get a new club in the process.

It's got banana skin written all over it & I will be shitting myself.
