West Ham v Liverpool Post Match

Sorry for the delay in posting my popular and sought after ratings and match review. This was due to being totally fucked after a weekend away.

But what a great result and match to make me feel better! I was pleased to see both Lucas and Firmino not play, even if the ongoing presence of the hapless Origi is painful for any Liverpool fan. All that matters is the result at this stage of the season. That's what they say. More accurately, all that matters is the result at ANY stage of a season, but it's still nice to get (an undeserved) clean sheet, and a nice plus 4 in the GD column.

We've already discussed most of the major talking points, but obviously the majesty of Coutinho and the much-missed movement and instincts of a genuine striking talent in Sturridge were highlights. The opening 30 minutes were quite dreadful, with slow minds and slow movement causing problems, especially down our left. But after the miraculous double miss from Ayew, West Ham disappeared and Coutinho ran amok, scoring and creating chances almost at will.

If we play like that against Boro at Anfield, we will be Top 4 no problem.

Mignolet (7) Seemed more or less in control of his area, made some good clearances and catches, and one or two decent saves. Still kicks like he's got polio.

Clyne (6) Zipped up and down with his usual energy and alacrity, and didn't waste possession much, although that was largely because he played it safe, short and simple.

Lovren (6) Hard to rate, as ever. If you look at moments there's often some good stuff: a series of good clearing headers and some impressive blocks and tackles. But he was left looking gormless for the amazing double-miss, as the ball just hit him, and then he stood gawping at it while Ayew had two goes at scoring, luckily missing both the useless twat.

Matip (6) Seemed less busy than Lovren, although that's partly a consequence of different playing styles, but what he had to do was done unfussily, with the usual grace and deceptive speed. Has got a head like a fucking fifty pence piece though, as demonstrated in their box, as he fucked up two chances.

Milner (4) This was not a game he will look back on with much fondness personally. He was very ponderous when attacking, and seemed to run out of energy, ideas and options, with some very poor passing and control. He was just about OK defensively, after a poor opening 15 minutes, but overall this was a poor display.

Can (7) Impressive display from a deeper position in a more holding role, Can was disciplined and careful in his passing and positioning, giving us a good platform to play on. There's still the issue of his inelastic movement at times, when he can be caught out by sharp acceleration and change of direction, but he's a far superior player to Lucas

Coutinho (9) You can't really ask for more. Coutinho revelled in the space and time a slightly more central and "traditional" midfield starting position afforded him. West Ham's deficiencies notwithstanding. His head was always up and he had plenty of willing runners and clever movement to aim for, especially Sturridge, who he duly picked out for the opening goal. Then he simply took West Ham to pieces, with his movement, calmness and dazzling quick feet way too much for them to cope with, as he scored twice and looked capable of more.

Lallana (6) Got forward a bit more in his advanced role, and was his usual energetic box of tricks, but didn't create anything of note and was only a peripheral threat.

Wijnaldum (6) Carried on his recent form in the first half, with an insipid shithouse display, but really perked up once we were ahead, finding lots of space and seeing plenty of the ball. One casually smacked volley looped onto the bar, and a scuffed mishit even allowed Origi to score. Was like a cat playing with a ball of string at the end.

Sturridge (8) His sharp and instinctive movement caused havoc, as Sturridge gave an extended reminder of the player he used to be. He made good runs, found space, was always moving and looking for chances to get a shot away, or create a chance for someone else. Insouciant finish for the goal, and even showed what looked a bit like his old pace once or twice.

Origi (5) Extra point for the goal, which was stabbed in from close range. This time, his typical flatfooted lack of movement and anticipation actually helped him score it, because when the shot was spooned towards him, everyone else was already moving to where it should have gone, apart from Origi, who was standing still in the box like a spaz. He was actually much improved in the second half, after a first half display that was witless and gutless, as he shied away from any physical confrontations.

I expect similar from Everton in their game against Arsenal next week

Indeed. You'd expect players like Lukaku to already have their minds on the summer and a most likely transfer aswell.

I think Boro will be much of the same. Its a team that have been relegated and are mentally and physically on their holidays already.
Doubt they feel any need to perform for Steve Agnew either. Several of them will be thinking about moving clubs as they dont want to play in the Championship.
Could turn out to be another "weird" game. We need to be focused and do our job though. Just as we did yesterday.

Agnew isn't going to be manager next season anyway.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Yeah sure Boro are relegated. They will want to give their fans something to crow about though. Stopping the Reds at Anfield from getting into the CL will certainly do that. If they were playing someone like Palace then I might agree with you. This is the one chance they have to gain some bragging rights.

You've gotta imagine some of their players will be trying to impress suitors too, & playing well against Liverpool may be their last big chance to do so.

I'm worried about this game. Hopefully, my fears will prove to be unfounded & we will spank them as some suggest, but I'd take a scrappy 1-0 win now in a heartbeat.

Its not gonna be easy. Not at all. Firstly its Liverpool, and we do things the hard way and we dont know which Boro side that will turn up making it very unpredictable.

But after this happened this weekend, Boro seem like a club that are in a bit of "state" at the moment, and there seem to be quite a distance between the fans, manager and the players.
That should work to our advantage.

Boro fans taunt home side by cheering Saints

Middlesbrough chanted Aitor Karanka's name after Nathan Redmond's goal for Southampton
Oh how Middlesbrough fans would swap places with the south coast club.
Instead the home faithful resorted to gallows humour to underline their anger at their side’s latest underwhelming display as they slip into the Championship next season.
Boro boss Steve Agnew said: “The supporters have been fantastic all season. They’ve waited a long time to get back in the Premier League and we haven’t given them enough.’’

Yeah - it's a good point after all they are a shower. FFF makes a good point also. These are professional players who will want to move onto greener pastures. They'll want a scalp and they'll see this game as an opportunity. They'll park the bus and then try and hit on the counter probably. Personally I think we'll win but as you say the hard way.

It's not a complete gimme for Arsenal to win both games, their fans are planning a boycott of tomorrow's night's game and it could get ugly against Everton.

Sanchez and Ozil may decide to down tools again now it's out of their hands.

There's still a slight chance of us coming 3rd, if WBA sneak a 0-0 tomorrow night it could come down to goal difference in the final game.

Its what we always say, but getting the first goal will obviously be key. If we do that, then they might just give up and fold.

It's completely about getting the first goal and how early. If we score within 20 minutes we could stuff them. The longer they hold out, the more their belief will grow, and they'll fancy themselves.

The crowd also need to support the team and not groan if we are not winning at half time.

Difficult one as it is their last game in the PL and they might decide to just go all out attack, which whilst leaving gaps would also mean we come under threat. However, I think we just need to go for the juggular and they will crumble.

I'd go with the same team and system as we played yesterday.
That will see us, hopefully, create the chances that we need.

The Anfield Crowd, last game at home for a CL place....

vs Middlesbrough who are the lowest scorers in the league with 27 goals....

who are already relegated and nothing to play for....

Jeez if we cant put these away then we dont deserve CL footy.

You make it sound bad if we loose that one mate!!!

and if the crowd can't get excited and revved up for this, then there is limited hope left for our famous atmosphere.

Maybe getting CL football now after a few years of mediocrity overall is what this club desperately needs.... to find its soul again and for people to be scared of coming to Anfield again....

I just hope the signings this summer if we do get it kick us on finally and get us back to where we were between 2005 - 2009 or even better back to the top!

With our transfer record over the past decade, most of them should know that a good performance against us means they'll probably be wearing our kit next season.

Motivated.

I would also take a scrappy victory of any kind right now.

As any kind of victory would help us I guess anyone would take that. But with a draw at Etihad tomorrow I would expect Rock'n Rolla!!

Yeah, but they'd be level on points. Meaning arsenal would need to beat Everton by 5 goals & we'd need to get beat.

I'd be surprised if Everton players didn't start banging own goals in if that was the case.

Of course Everton shipping loads of goals & us winning regardless would be good though.

Thought there would almost be a perverse satisfaction in seeing Everton get a result there, which ultimately allowed us to stumble to fourth.
Both the Bitters and Gooners would be livid at the same time.

There's zero chance Everton win that game because they know that gifting Arsenal points may well cost us the CL.

Their fans will be cheering Arsenal on, esp if we're behind in our match.

Just can't see the arse-bitters be significant if we and City are level on points with them a goal ahead on Sunday!!

It's not going to be easy, but I can hardly imagine an opposition I'd rather chose, if I had the choice.
So we just have to beat them.

I think we'll stuff them. We have to treat it like a European game at Anfield. Go for the jugular from the off, high intensity and batter their goal .
