Bent, Downing, Carroll, we're like the England b team. Is Steve Hodge still playing?

I'd take any 1 goal every 2 games Striker, I don't care if he's Bent or Straight!

2001–2005 Ipswich Town 122 (48)
2005–2007 Charlton Athletic 68 (31)
2007–2009 Tottenham Hotspur 60 (18)
2009–2011 Sunderland 58 (32)
2011– Aston Villa 30 (14)

Not a bad return

He sounds like the sort of player we'd sign at the mo.

Guess all the moneyball stuff got fucked out the door huh?

At the moment I would take him.

from behind?
in a fight?
to dinner?

Just looking at the stats - the likes of RVP, Hernandez, Sturridge - the leading scorers are all scoring at a pace of a goal every 4+ to 5+ shots. Bent has been doing that over his league career, dropping a little to a goal every 6 shots last season (after switching teams mid-season). He's back up to 1 in 5 this season pre-injury.

As long as we don't overpay (yes, really hard thing for us to do I know), I think this deal has a good chance of working well for us. I don't care if he's a career journeyman - it's his goals that matter. If Villa wants Carroll on loan as part of the deal, it'd be even better - we let him find his minutes and form while we get a scorer in exchange.

WE NEED A FOX IN THE BOX!!!! Id take darren bent for 10 million. But for someone who has basically done nothing, If we give villa 20 million then this cunt will be up there with Robbie Keanes combined transfer fees.........AND HE CANT EVEN DO A RUBBISH CARTWHEEL AND A TUMBLE WHEN HE SCORES!!!

Now that we'll see play Carroll frequently he'll find his form and start scoring for fun. Watch this space.

Buying someone like Bent would be insane at this stage in time. IMO.

If it was up to me, I would be looking for somebody from a crappy league who is young and has scored loads of goals and just needs experience, coaching and better players around them to get goals. The anti-N'Gog if you will.

That's not asking too much is it :-\

We signed an injured Carroll (thigh injury, wasn't it?) And he's yet to get up to speed. Now, we're purportedly after an injured Darren Bent - thigh injury too...
/🙂

Tomorrows Rumour... "Liverpool after Jermaine Defoe"...

Same names over and over and over... lazy journalism.

If we sign Darren Bent I will cry at our mediocrity..... Plus Kenny will have lost the plot.

More like Suarez, less like Carroll, Downing etc.... PER-LEASE

I really really really hope we stop buying shitty average English players.

The strategy has clearly got us no where....

If we buy Darren Bent...i want Comolli's head on a plate.

Didn't we do this back in the 80s though?

If someone wants to drag out Kenny's transfer policy i'd be grateful given that i have no idea what most of the players were like that he bought back then. Did we mostly buy shitty, average English players then?

Yeah Barns Beardsley McMahon Aldridge (Born herel played for Ireland) all English and all became superstars under him, WTF was he thinking?

He bought loads of Gash back in the 80's and won fuck all with them didn't he?

Resists the urge to name call ...

Hang on, I think you whooshed me!

I've no idea Asbo, that's why i'm asking.

Where any of them pretty shit when we bought them, or was it obvious they were all going to be that good?

I'm not against the signing of British players, in fact, we have to build our squad largely around them so we need to buy decent ones when they are available.

However, I obviously, like everybody, prefer signings like Suarez, and feel we need at least one of these signings every year.

Well we had a lot more trust in the managers back then, no internet to talk and talk and talk about things, just a few mates in the pub, and it was more a case of 'Whos he has anyone seen him play' if they was from the lower leagues.

Kenny has built 2 Title winning sides, he has a plan that works, I have faith in his judement, I am sure he tells Comolli what type of player he wants and then gets a list or something to choose from?

Kenny builds teams, take a look at this little piece to show how his mind works!

Aldridge had already scored 15 goals in 25 matches that season for Oxford but after joining Liverpool he only added two goals to his total for the season. Perhaps not surprising as he came on as substitute in all but two of his ten appearances for the Reds in the 1986/87 season. Dalglish didn't seem to keen on using him but told "Aldo" not to worry, his time would come when Rush had left and other players who complimented him better had arrived. A few months later, John Barnes and Peter Beardsley came to Liverpool.

Its pieces of the Jigsaw again, and once they slot in, we see the massive difference

From what I recall he bought a lot of crap towards the end of his tenure so the following Liverpool manager was always going to have to be a bit more canny than perhaps was expected. Too bad the way things turned out though.

He also bought Jimmy Carter 🙂

Never mind Jimmy Carter, he also bought Nicky Tanner.

But there isn't a manager alive or dead who never dropped a rick in the market.

If you're talking about Digger, Beardo, McMahon and Aldo, they were all known to be good/very good players, though Aldo was untried at the very top level.

Actually if you look at the players he spent >100K on, there arent many duds in there :-

Ian Rush August 1988 2,800,000 Juventus
Peter Beardsley July 1987 1,900,000 Newcastle United
Ronny Rosenthal June 1990 1,000,000 Standard Liege
John Barnes June 1987 900,000 Watford
Ray Houghton October 1987 825,000 Oxford United
Jimmy Carter January 1991 800,000 Millwall
John Aldridge January 1987 750,000 Oxford United
David Speedie February 1991 675,000 Coventry City
Glenn Hysen August 1989 650,000 Fiorentina
David Burrows October 1988 500,000 West Bromwich Albion
Nigel Spackman February 1987 400,000 Chelsea
Steve McMahon September 1985 350,000 Aston Villa
Jamie Redknapp January 1991 350,000 AFC Bournemouth
Barry Venison July 1986 250,000 Sunderland
Don Hutchison November 1990 175,000 Hartlepool United

Agreed, though some of them were lucky to come to the club when it was still competing at the very top, and might well have fared a lot worse if they'd arrived a few years later.

Yeah, weird thing though, we was the only team interested in buying every one of them, thats a *truefact*, when we asked could we buy them, at least in Barnes and Beardo's case, no other teams was in the market for any of them.

Kenny even talked about the Barnes Beardo thing on the old Granada TV programme the reporter said something like 'Your team improved substantially with the purchase of Barne sand Beardsely' and he said 'Anyone could have snapped them up, but I was the only one to go in with an offer'
