What’s your Liverpool fan story?

There was a similar thread a couple years ago, so I already told my story then. In short, I rooted for Dynamo Kyiv growing up in the 1990's (it was hard not to root for a team of Shevchenko, Rebrov and co. coached by Lobanovsky), then briefly switched to Shakhtar, which represented my home region and a kind of antidote to Dynamo's pervasive corruption and dominance of domestic game. I guess the disillusionment with Dynamo led to my general dislike of teams who dominate and bully their domestic leagues and thus I could never see myself rooting for Real Madrid, 90's United, Bayern etc.

By early 2000's after I moved to the US, I did not care about Ukrainian domestic football anymore, had a lot more opportunities to watch any league and team I like and started searching for a major European team to support. The timing was perfect with Liverpool just appointing Rafa and bringing in players like Xabi and yes - Milan Baros; I saw Rafa as a Lobanovsky-like figure, loved the fast-paced teamwork-oriented football embedded in the Liverpool DNA and everything about the story and ethos of the club - it just took a couple of games to turn me into a fan for life.

That is very cool. If I had space I'd love to get a set up in a man cave, could have some fun drinking sessions with subbuteo. Much more skill involved than Fifa.
 
I am not 100% sure what pushed me to be a fan - I tend to think it was my grandfather in Cape Town who supported them, and maybe my uncle (though as I get older, I'm not sure anymore!). By 8 I had my first full kit (Candy - which my 11 year old wears now) and was a 'fan' but couldn't watch any games as they just weren't available in Israel or Turkey, or even Italy. When I went to boarding school in England ('92), it was just as God showed himself to his people and with Shoot, Match, MOTD and newspapers, it just kicked off to what it became ...

I don't know how much I care nowadays but it's always going to be a part of me ... as it is now for my boys ... It's been an amazing ride, despite the 3 decade wait for a league title, and I have enjoyed having many of the folks here 'accompany' me on it through the KT and SCM days.

We would have 3 or 4 of us all go to each others' house, bring our own team. I had ones I had painted my own 'kit' alongside my Liverpool one. Then we'd run mini world cup style tournaments etc. This was pre consoles and before we all discovered skateboards and mountain bikes etc.

Maybe if we were to set it up now it would be boring AF. I like the nostalgia of thinking it was great fun at the time 🤣

I hope, for your sake, you weren't at boarding school with Farage
 
I'm no great Farage fan but I can't help wondering whether too much is being made of all that. My mum was Jewish and I experienced remarks like Farage is supposed to have made when I was at school. Nothing a swift right hook couldn't solve.

I’m not a local fan — for me it was love at first sight. I didn’t even choose it… it just happened. When I look back now, this club feels like my friend and a real part of my life.

There’s something about this club, the fans, and the bond we share. It’s different. Every club has supporters — United, Arsenal, Barça, Madrid, everyone. But the connection between Liverpool fans feels unique… like we’re one big family.


Sometimes I joke that supporting Liverpool feels like being a parent — you want to protect the club, help it grow, and worry about transfers etc. Just kidding, but you know the feeling. 😄

For me it all started in 1974, we were living in London at the time, originally from Cardiff, my dad was landlord of a pub in the strand, The Lyceum Tavern, and on FA Cup day, Liverpool v Newcastle my dad got into the Savoy (he was friends with the savoy manager) and he got into to the Liverpool celebration dinner and grabbed an FA Cup winners menu from one of the tables and got Shankley & Keegan and a few more of the players to sign it, then he got very drunk with the team and brought the signed menu home with him, when he got in he asked me and my siblings (3 boys, 1 girl) who supported Liverpool, I was the only one that put my hand up, even though I didn’t really, he gave me the menu, I’ve still got it, I was 10 years old at the time, I’ve been a passionate Red ever since!
