I was just thinking about this on the way to work today and in the last 20 years, you could argue that we have only signed one top class attacking talent in Torres that doesn't come with any caveats when you discuss how successful he's been. It's quite amazing really.
I suppose in the last ten years we've had defensive managers who prioritised building a solid defensive base before addressing attacking concerns (and getting it largely wrong) and before that a long dodgy transitional period, which maybe can account for it to some degree but it's still a very poor record.
I can't really think of any other top clubs that have struggled so badly in this department. And it's not like we've not tried - we've gone for the high performers at youth tournaments, world cups, highly rated Englishmen... none of it has really worked.
Thank god for likes of Fowler, Owen and Gerrard.
