Papers are going with this one today.. Bit of speculative journalism imho..

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants to hand Steven Gerrard a new two-year deal, writes the Sunday People.

The England captain, who has one more season remaining on his £130,000-a-week contract, will be 33 in May but Rodgers believes he can play at the top for several more years.

And he would love to reunite him in midfield with old pal Xabi Alonso by sealing an £8.5million deal for the Real Madrid star.

American-based owner John Henry and the Fenway Sports Group are anxious to cut costs at Anfield, but Rodgers will stress to them just how important Gerrard is to the club.

And Reds legend Gerrard is the man Rodgers may rely on to lure former team-mate Alonso back to the club and thrill the fans. The Reds have been looking into the transfer since learning that talks between the 31-year-old midfielder and Real Madrid over a new deal had stalled.

Liverpool are believed to have made contact with Alonso’s agent, with talk of an £80,000-a-week deal on the table.

But Gerrard is the priority for Rodgers. As he prepared for today’s trip to Premier League strugglers Aston Villa, the Anfield chief said: “Steven has a year left and it’s something he and I are about to discuss.”

Ryan Giggs will be playing past 40 and Rodgers believes Gerrard won’t be far off that milestone. “I’ve never thought about replacing him because he’s got many years left,” he added.

“You look back at Gordon Strachan and Gary McAllister and guys like that. These players slept and rested in the afternoons, they ate the right things and kept their body weight the same.

“Steven is one of them. He’s a remarkable professional.”

You couldn't not offer Gerrard a new contract , you couldn't not bring Alonso back for sub £10m.
I think there a few young boys that could be there or there abouts in a couple of years that would learn so much from Xabi.

His stats are good, but no doubt he offers far more than any stats will show. His positional sense is second to none. So difficult to determine what situations he might have avoided by simply playing, rather than having to prevent a situation after the fact. Same could be said for someone like Didi, or a centre back like Sami.

#Real are willing to sell #Alonso for a cut price to LFC if they get first option on #Suarez IF #LFC decide to sell him in near future.

They can fuck off.

Putting a first option out there is as good as saying yes we will sell him. He'll be pissed off we've done it & it'll put every club on alert that they unsettle him.

For xabi at his age, that's not worth it, I'd prefer one more season of suarez than two more seasons of Alonso.

Exactly. And I can't believe FSG need Rodgers to convince them about Gerrard's importance; they're not that stupid.

Seems there could be something in this article. All over the papers this morning.. and a similar story is being reported in Spain.

True. It does sound very 'Tribal Football' though.

I.e: absolute bullshit.

What's the bid deal about first option, They would still need to agree a fee for him with us.

Seems a win win

I'm sure he said about a week ago that there was no interest. Probably actually, this guy knows nothing.

Years ago he had some access to Rafa and in fairness he did come up with some good early info.then, but he's been doing no more than blow smoke for a long time now.

As much as I loved Alonso I'd prefer 6 more months of Suarez over 4 years of Alonso.

Suarez is that good.

Real Madrid will offer Xabi Alonso a two-year contract extension in a bid to prevent him returning to Liverpool, writes the Sunday People.

As Sunday People Sport told you last week, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is weighing up a move for the former Anfield favourite.

But sources close to Real say the 31-year-old midfielder, who has been in sparkling form this season, will be offered a pay rise and two more years at the Bernabeu on top of the one year he has remaining on his current contract.

Alonso had told club bosses that he wanted to leave at the end of this season and that put the Reds on alert to the chance of taking him back to Merseyside.

Part of me suspected thats all this has been from the start, Alonso wanting more cash and using our well established interest in him to force Madrids hand

Fuck the Ginger bearded cunt, all he ever really wanted was to play for the biggest club in his country of birth and earn more money and win loads of trophies including a World Cup with his country. Sod the git, trying to get more out of that by using us, just because he has a connection. It's like he has an agent.

Cynical.

Whatever Xabi does next is fine by me. He's earnt it. If, by some miracle, he does re-appear at Anfield I'll be mithering everyone on the board and in the family for a 'spare'. He is such a joy to watch, not least because he's a winner.

At the same time if all went tits up at Real he now knows LFC is a major option for him.
Win-win for Xabi.

As for his agent, don't agents generally prefer transfers?
The percentage they get is far greater than what they get from contract extensions.
Maybe his agent actually wanted the transfer to happen?
