Xabi to Chelsea ?

I like Xabi and I think he's a better player now than in he was for most of his time with us. Klopp told his players to stop Alonso as the number one priority, because they can't play the same way without him, and you all cream yourselves over Klopp, so let's not be silly billies and pretend Xabi isn't still a great footballer, probably with another 3 good years in him, or maybe even 5.

He would improve our team a lot. But if Rodgers doesn't want him then that's that.

I agree with Woland that a lot of you seem to be horny for him. And I agree with Rosco that you're all deluding yourselves if you don't think that every single player in our current squad, and our manager, wouldn't go to Chelsea under the right circumstances.

Hahaha - another player with o ly Liverpool in his heart opts to go to the biggest pile of cunts with an open cheque book.

.... and so it is....

I dunno why everyone gets so emotional about all this stuff still.

Is it coz he's handsome and you're all girly men?

He's a basque who went to play for Madrid.

Exactly. He's just a very good footballer, not some God. I don't get all the hero worship.

Xabi is like a handsome and totemic symbol of the best of the Benitez years, something Rafa himself could never be.

It's better to have Xabi Alonso and not need him, than to need Xabi Alonso and not have him.

Like a tissue. Better to be caught with it than without it.

I can't believe you're comparing him to a tissue.

I'd rather some steel in midfield before wanting alonso. Alonso won't stop us being lightweight.

Xabi is great at retaining possession, a fantastic tackler, and hardly lightweight. Id much rather him than a Mascherano.

IF we get Alonso, it's almost a certainty that he'll line up alongside Gerrard, behind a midfielder like Henderson.
It didn't work great in the past, but it's also obvious Gerrard no longer bombs forward at every opportunity the way he used to when he was younger (thus leaving a gaping hole in midfield that the likes of Hamann and Murphey had to cover for). And also, for e.g. in 2005 CL final it wasn't a Henderson type ahead of them, it was Kewell. Quite a different proposition.
He happens to be one of the best tacklers and reader of the game.
My hope is that it would work this time around. If it does, it would certainly benefit us by having two of the smartest midfielders in Europe anchoring the midfield.

Disagree with the second sentence (I'd love them both back) but largely agree with the first, though "fantastic" may be going it a bit.

Underrated, yes . "Hugely" I'm not so sure about. it was definitely better than he was given credit for, but it wasn't a centrepiece of his game.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has poured cold water on suggestions he could leave the club this summer.
Alonso has been linked with a move to Chelsea if, as has been widely speculated, Madrid coach Jose Mourinho quits the Spanish giants and returns to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.
However, Spain international Alonso seems determined to prolong his four-year stay at Madrid for at least another campaign.
"Of course I'm going to be here next season," Alonso was quoted as saying by Marca following Madrid's eventful win over Malaga last night.
Madrid had to beat Malaga or concede their Primera Division title to Barcelona, and Mourinho's men ensured their arch rivals would have to wait a little while longer to be crowned Spanish champions for a 22nd time as they earned a 6-2 victory at the Bernabeu.
The league may be beyond them, but Madrid still have plenty to play for this season with a Copa del Rey final against Atletico to look forward to next week and Alonso believes it is vital they do not let their standards slip.
"It's important to maintain good feelings, with an important match coming up next week," the former Liverpool man said on his club's website.
"We prepared for this match (against Malaga) with the same seriousness as always and with the desire to do well.
"We're mentally prepared for the cup final, it will be a tough match. It's a clear objective, one we can achieve this year and nothing else can distract us. We all have to pull in the same direction."

‘Madridistas’ have a few things on their minds at the moment: the necessary and much-desired extension of Cristiano Ronaldo’s deal at Real Madrid, the appointment of a new coach and the signing of Gareth Bale. However, one concern has been dealt with: AS has learnt that Xabi Alonso has decided to fulfil his current contract at Madrid (which runs out on 30 June 2014) and is prepared to sit down with the club to negotiate a renewal, thought likely to run until 2016.

In recent months, the Basque player has been dogged by a pelvic injury which has reduced his usual on-field influence. In February, he had a meeting with coach José Mourinho and since then has undergone a recovery process that has allowed him to play only in the key Champions League matches, the odd La Liga encounter and the Copa del Rey final. This permitted him to feature against Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final of Europe’s top club competition, as well as against Atlético Madrid. But he was a shadow of the splendid Xabi Alonso who was the fulcrum of a side that won La Liga with a record 121 goals and 100 points.

Having failed to shake off the problem, Xabi has chosen to pull out of the Confederations Cup, place himself in the hands of the Real Madrid medical staff and, thinking about his club, look at all the recovery options available. Right now, the debate is between surgery or a more conservative treatment. At 31 (he turns 32 on 25 November), the former Liverpool man has accepted that he has two or three years left at a mid-high level if he looks after his body.

Mourinho’s methods and footballing philosophy have meant that Xabi has always worked well with the coach. The Portuguese’s departure from Madrid had led to speculation linking the midfielder with a move to follow Mou to his next club. However, Alonso does not want to leave the Santiago Bernabéu with a whimper (he was not even able to figure in the final La Liga matches) and has opted to see out his contract and wait for the decision taken by the club.

The player did not like the rumours linking his future with that of Mourinho. Reports from the British press had even suggested that he could be in line for a move to Chelsea, allowing Madrid to receive a transfer fee (if he leaves next June without renewing his deal, he can go for free).

Club president Florentino Pérez met with Alonso and his agent, Iñaki Ibáñez, a few months ago, telling the pair that Madrid are highly satisfied with the player’s performance and that the club was inclined to respect his decision on his future, whatever it was. The possibility of a move to the United States, where the league is physically less demanding, was mooted. But Xabi wants to stay on at Madrid, and his decision is final. He’ll be at the Bernabéu until 2014 at least, and that’s good news.

Xabi Alonso's future at Real Madrid is hanging in the balance. Will he stay or will he go at the end of the coming campaign? No one at the club seems to know, which is why 'Los Blancos' have been forced to compile a shortlist of possible replacements.

At the age of 31, Xabi is in the twilight of his career and this could well be his last year at the Bernabéu. The Basque maestro's current deal expires on 30th June 2014 – after which date he could walk away for free – and there has been no news on a possible extension.

This equation is further complicated by the midfielder's fitness troubles. Having been plagued by a groin problem throughout the latter stages of last season, Alonso decided to undergo surgery on 7th June in a bid to get rid of the issue once and for all.

The procedure, which was a complete success, was performed by Munich-based specialist Ulrike Muschaweck at the Hernienzentrum. Now the hope is that the midfielder will be fit as a fiddle by the time pre-season gets underway under Carlo Ancelotti on 15th July.

Alonso has previously stated on several occasions that he has no intention of outstaying his welcome in Madrid and that he would only sign a new deal if he felt he still had a useful contribution to make. The litmus test will come over the course of this season, meaning the enigma might not be cleared up for some time yet.
