We don't match up great against Spurs - their midfield is better than ours, so it's important we get this right. Modric and VdV will run things so it's imperative that Spearing plays and makes a nuisance of himself against both. Gerrard must play as he's the only one with the ability in the squad to set the tempo, and I think it's necessary that we outplay them in midfield to win this. For the third slot in midfield, I'd pick Henderson over Adam simply because I think that gives us a better balanced midfield. Adam is too much of a start-stop kind - while he has the ability to create, he also gives the ball away sloppily very often, and has the tendency to commit sloppy fouls. We need to be crisp, efficient and fluid in midfield, and combination of Spearing, Gerrard and Henderson is our best bet at that currently (I'd particularly want to see the interplay between Gerrard and Henderson, glimpses of the potential of which we've already seen). In an ideal world, I'd have had Shelvey ahead of Henderson, but that's not going to happen, and Shelvey hasn't had enough first team experience (which I find very unfortunate) to come into such a big game.
Defence picks itself. Johnson v. Bale might be a bit of a worry, but I don't reckon Kenny's going to change things, and to be fair, the fact that Johnson's going to attack down the right hand side also means that Bale should have a regular job of tracking back.
Up front, despite Carroll's emerging form, I don't see him as a great fit against Spurs. As studsup has very rightly pointed out, we tend to go long when Carroll plays, and that's inviting trouble against a team which has the ability to dominate possession, and attack with both pace and technical ability. We need to play high, keep possession, and attack from the front with as much possession as possible. Quick, crisp and flowing football from the attacking three. Suarez, Kuyt and Bellamy offers the best chance at that.
