The "what the hell happened to *insert player name*" thread

Status
Not open for further replies.
A lot of times it just comes down to injuries. Player gets a bad injury or series of injuries, is out for ages and when they come back they struggle to get back to full fitness because of the injury and because they are older anyway. Added to that other players would have come along to replace them.

I suspect this is what happened with Christie, who wasn't amazing anyway really.

A lot of players probably lose interest a bit after that too.

But maybe they were never 'the shit' in the first place........

You don't usually get signed by Man U if you weren't "the shit" at some stage in your career.

Of course you do. Djemba Djemba for example. Jonathan Greening. Jordi Cruyff. Bebe. Obertan. Bellion. Kleberson. Taibi. Tosic. Llajic. I could go on but I won't

Most of those are probably a way of getting money to Jason without Slur having to pay inheritance tax.

Wasn't there another dodgy signing, the scottish kid (Miller?)

Ronaldihno.

He had the world at the feet and should be bossing football, still today.

He got fat and fluffed his career - its a crying shame if you ask me.

I remember when he tore chelsea a new one in the cl and scored 2 with one being a beauty and thinking he would be at the top of thr tree for years to come..

I've got a feeling carlos tevez could fade into obscurity in the next few years, which again is a criminal waste of talent.

Thierry henry - he couldve still performed at the highest level for a few years rather than the mls.

In terms of those that vanished off the face of the earth who was the young lad at birmingham was it? On loan a few years ago , I think he was argentinian and he was absolutely shit hot and I remember thinking hed be at chelsea, utd, barca in no time - zarate was it?

Kezman? The coke head who was at chelsea around the same time?

Liam Miller now plying his trade with Perth Glory. When signed for United he was been talked about as the next Roy Kenae. Has probably played for 6/7 clubs since and done fuck all.

Yeah The buck toothed one should be in a 'wasted talent' thread, along with our very own Stan Collymore, born with a gift, doing a job they love, and fucking it all up because they are tits .....

But you can't compare Smith to them. He was a somewhat premiership proven player. Played a couple of seasons for Leeds and was part of the national team.

True. Sometimes players who move to teams who have been a class act elsewhere just don't fit in with the team though. See Gary Birtles and Veron when they went to Man U. Morientes when he came to us.

I think Smith is another one who has had more than his fair share of injuries.

He also got moved to another position when he was at United which didn't really work out so well

That's what killed his career.

I think he wanted to leave, and was probably just down to bad timing more than anything else.

I've never heard of a player that went from being a premier league striker to becoming a defensive midfielder.

Stan Collymore is not a tit, he suffers badly from depression. It doesn't excuse his behaviour but it goes along way to explaining it.

*doesn't want another thread on depression so ducks out*

It's possible to be both a tit and suffer from depression.

Maybe not, but many players move from attacking positions to more defensive ones, and unless you can say his constant injuries were a direct result of him moving to midfield then that wouldn't be what 'killed' his career.

He might well have become a success in that position, or he might have moved back to being a striker or attacking midfielder (where he also played at Leeds and when he first went to United. He wasn't always an out and out striker). We'll never know, and the reason we won't ever know is because he has spent so much time injured!

Of course, I'm living proof of that! But this whole, he pissed his career away stuff is slightly slewed imho given what we know now about him.

He should have just moved to another club when it didn't work out from him.
