Maybe not, but many players move from attacking positions to more defensive ones, and unless you can say his constant injuries were a direct result of him moving to midfield then that wouldn't be what 'killed' his career.

He might well have become a success in that position, or he might have moved back to being a striker or attacking midfielder (where he also played at Leeds and when he first went to United. He wasn't always an out and out striker). We'll never know, and the reason we won't ever know is because he has spent so much time injured!

He should have just moved to another club when it didn't work out from him.
Well, he did. He went to Newcastle.

His record at United wasn't completely awful you know

Reminds me of another ex-everton striker, bought for millions by Arsenal: Franny Jeffers.

For all the plaudits Wenger gets, his transfer policy is sometimes like hook-a-duck...Richard Wright, Antonio Reyes & Sylvanian Wiltord spring to mind.

I meant as soon as he was moved into another position.
I never really rated Smith but his downfall was pretty rapid after he joined Man U.
Just saying that playing defensive midfield for a year or two have affected him in a negative way.

Denilson.

Made a good start to his Arsenal career and was always brought up as an example by Rafa how gutted he was in missing out on talented youngsters like him. Quite some way ahead of Lucas back then given the way he kicked off in England. Played lesser games season by season though, before being shipped out to Sao Paulo on loan.

Is it because of the progress of the likes of Song and Diaby or did he just have a good start/season? Still 23 yrs of age though but would probably have to drop to a club of lower stature to progress.

Lee Hendrie, always thought he was going to be a top player - showed it in flashes but he came nowhere near fulfilling his potential.

Giles Barnes was hailed as the "next big thing" at Derby. Then he dissappeared from the face of the earth.

Ended up at Celtic didn't he? Also Joe Ledley, everyone wanted him a few years ago, and now he's at Celtic too.

Giles Barnes probably just wasn't that good when it came to it. Although maybe if he had gone to the right club with the right manager at the right time things may have been different.

Instead I think his 2 stints in the Premier League involved being managed by Hodgson

What about Sebastian Diesler and Javier Saviola. They were the bees knees but now where are they?

Deisler hung up his boots years ago. 2007 if I'm not mistaken.

James Beattie. On the fringes of the England side at one point, then pif paf poof, gone.

Kinkladze was amazing, my favourite non LFC player for a while.

Also what happened to Cheyrou?

Tonton Zola Moukoko.
He went on to win over 10 leagues and European Cups for Liverpool alongside Fredrik Lagemyr, Zlatan Muslimovic, Seth Johnson, Franco Costanzo, etc.
