Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo have linked Barcelona with a swoop for Liverpool centre-half Daniel Agger.

Ignoring the fact that Agger has YNWA tattooed on his knuckles, literally, the Spanish paper report that the Danish international “is crazy about going to the club.”

According to journalist Roger Torello, Agger has become Barcelona’s prime defensive target this summer after moves for PSG’s Thiago Silva have faltered.

The Catalans believe that signing the Brazilian international is “very complicated and depends on many factors”, while ultimately “the signing of Thiago Silva requires a heavy investment now falls outside the scope of the club.”

Sadly El Mundo Deportivo failed to quantify those statements with any tangible numbers.

With Barcelona now seeking a cheaper centre-half alternative, Liverpool favourite Daniel Agger is reportedly at the front of the queue.

The story has been given extra fuel after Liverpool academy chief Rodolfo Borrell, a former Barcelona youth-coach, told reporters that Daniel Agger would fit in perfectly at the Camp Nou. Borrell told Catalan radio this week:

Agger has the right characteristics to adapt to Barca’s play. He is a very trustworthy centre-half, above all on the ball, because he comes out very well with it. In a style like Barca’s where he start to build moves from the keeper, a defender must have a good pass, must make the right decisions, and be quick when you lose the ball and good in the air at set-pieces both in defence and attack. Agger fulfills all these qualities.

I think if we get a big offer - we should consider it seriously. It's probably the last big offer we can get - and with a 20 million + offer, we can get Papa + Ilori ...

If we do sell Danny boy, we need to keep Skrtel however ... We can't rid ourselves of 4 CBs and start again ...

20M+ and he's gone for me, but I wouldn't hesitate to ship out Skrtel as well if there is an 8M+ offer. As long as we do our business early, there is no reason that a new group of central defenders can't gel over the course of a couple months during the offseason. No matter how you put it, Skrtel isn't going to be the glue that holds our backline together.

Barca are looking at their 2nd options. After Neymar, do they have cash to spend on Agger?

Doubt we could get more than 10 million for him due to his age and wages

If we play it right and Barca really want him, we get 20-25M. In reality, he probably commands 15M minimum escalating to 18M from negotiating it up. Wages aren't really an issue, and defenders age slowly.

They should definitely have the money to spend, especially considering central defense is one of the very few places they don't have loads of depth.

If Barcelona want him, Barcelona probably get him. If we get the right amount, it doesn't matter to me either way.

Nah. He isn't good enough to be a regular starter and won't want to sit on the bench so he'll need to go regardless.

As for Agger - he's the only one of our CB's worth keeping and I feel he's never quite had the suitable partner for us to get the best out of him. Still if they offer silly money the wisest thing would probably be to sell.

No we couldn't. They could have Thiago Silva for that and they have just made it clear that the asking price is too expensive.

Why would PSG sell him for almost 10 million less than when they bought him? Especially as he's become even more dominating ...

PSG just paid 38M for him a season ago, and he just had a very successful season. They have no reason to sell.

Thiago Silva is a perfect fit for Barcelona, he plays well on the ball, is quick and mobile, and is very consistent. Throw in that Barcelona have a dearth of central defenders, and they will be forced to overpay if it comes to that.

Agger has never looked that bothered about moving and unless I'm mistake he's got a number of years left on his contract, so if they do pursue him we are going to be in a strong position. Will make for a nice change.

I get why we'd sell if the money becomes crazy - around the £25M mark - but I don't get why anyone in their right mind would let him go for £10M.

Ergo, Ryan, you are not in your right mind.

PS I will for now take comfort in Mark1975's words that Barca are of course not even slightly interested in Agger.... 😉

I never said they weren't interested, I said you were promoting any half arsed link and using it to champion him up a bit.

Ah well, was only jesting mate 🙂

I know, I know. I think we'd be daft to sell, if only for keeping "some" continuity, we can't replace the entire backline and expect to hit the ground running. Personally I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Coates or Skrtel stay anyway.

It's hard to see us selling Agger, Skrtel and Reina whilst also losing Carra.
I doubt that Agger is going anywhere. He is a stalwart in the team. Possibly our new Vice captain and he did turn Citeh down last season right?.

It would be extremely bold to sell all of them no matter the price, and as you say, we haven't sold any of them yet so perhaps there'll be a few surprise stays.

Completely agree, if we lost 3 out of the 5 in defence and keeper, just can't see how we can hope to have a steady defence not matter who we sign. Stability is the key and we can replace 2 at the most but replacing 2 centre backs is really not possible if we want to compete for top 4 in my opinion. Just too much for 3 new players in key positions to get up and running in the first half the season. We have a decent set of games in the first 10 games unlike last season. Best thing we can do is to keep what we can and a dominating CB. As long as decent CM can offer a little protection to the back 4 when required, we will pick up more games and will get the ground running. If we bring in new exotic CBs in place of stability, we will yet again start poorly and have too much to do after the first 10 games.

At the rate Barcelona away kits are flying out the shops in Liverpool, we'll be handing them the funds they need to buy Agger.

I'd rather have two new CB's than Skrtel playing. Good players tend to play better than shit ones even if they are new.

And remember the summer of 1999? Hyypiä and Henchoz didn't have that much trouble adapting I recall.
