Allen's impact

Today was the game when Allen started showing what he brings to the team. I don't think his performance was particularly exceptional - he didn't directly contribute to any of the goals and yet again got caught in possession in our own half (only once, as opposed to 3 times in the last game – and he should thank Sakho for bailing him out with a brilliant interception). I think Allen can and will play even better. But what he did today is that for the first time since the beginning of last season he really put his stamp on the game. Or rather, he made the team play his way.

I need to look at the stats, but I'm pretty sure today we had one of the highest % of possession all season, possibly the highest. There was a period at 2:0 when our pressure was Barca-like, just wave after relentless wave of attacks, not allowing West Ham any counterplay whatsoever (unfortunately as soon as they got the ball for a couple of minutes, they scored - our old defensive problem rearing its ugly head again. But that's topic for another discussion). Do you remember how midway through the last season the team has switched to a more counter-attacking mode and how Allen just couldn't find his place in that team? Well, today I think was the first game since last year when this team went back to the possession-based, dominating mode.

Rodgers has made this switch at the exactly right time, because with Sturridge out for an extended period of time, we lost the main fulcrum of our counter-attack based game. We had to change the way we play in attack. Suarez is a great player who will find his chances in any system – this is what ultimately makes him a better player than "pure" finishers like Van Persie or Torres; if the team doesn't play to his strengths he still will try and claw and fight until he makes it work. But still, it's better to play to his strengths and we all know that he doesn't have great pace over distance, but is deadly around the penalty area, particularly if he is allowed to touch the ball a lot.

This is what "Allen's game" does for Suarez; he can try one outrageous skill after another and if it doesn't work this time, he knows that in a minute he will have the ball at his feet again and he can run at the defender again and again until something works. The combination of methodically effective recycling of possession and world-class attacking talent is the most potent weapon in football. After being subjected to this kind of treatment for a period of time, most defenders just get mentally and physically drained, their reaction time slows down and all kinds of mistakes pop up – exactly what we saw by the end of today's game. Their brains just turn off, as if to say: "fuck it, I can't take this anymore. If you can't score I'll even help you myself. Here, I'll put the ball in the net, just make it stop." This kind of football not just wins games, but demoralizes opponents as well.

In the last 2 games Suarez has scored (sometimes with the assistance of an opposing defender) 7 goals. This barrage of goals coincided with Allen's return in the starting lineup and I don't think this is just by chance. Who knows, maybe Suarez can approach Messi-like numbers if we build the game around him the same way. Now this was just two games at home and it remains very much an open question whether we've come far enough as a team compared to last season to sustain this style of play on the road and against stronger opponents. The Spurs game, with their abundance of riches in midfield, will certainly be a huge test for Allen and for all of our midfield. But at least for now, let's enjoy the fact that Allen's resurrection (© KHL) seems to be finally underway.

he didn't directly contribute to any of the goals
Allen won the ball before the first own goal. I'd say that he was directly involved.
I have to say that Allen has been a revelation, I've been calling for his inclusion in the side and I'm happy that he's doing well. I love his tenacity. Never stops running and is a ball winner.

Well, by directly I meant goals and assists. You know, central midfielders are allowed to get those, we just kind of forgot about it lately 🙂

Allen also made a great (and difficult) interception and pass that led to Suarez being brought down on the turn, which earned us a free-kick for Sakho's goal. Technically not even a secondary assist, but in reality the goal would not happen if not for him.

Yup, liked what I saw.

Showed some ball-winning skills as well although he has to cut out losing the ball in our half.

I thought his passing was top-notch.

- Suarez received the most balls from Coutinho (13) and Allen (9).
- The central defence duo played most of their passes to Allen.

I think you can't have a midfield of Allen+Henderson to win the title because there is just too few goals in them.

They don't have to score many if they have Sturridge, Suarez, Coutinho and Gerrard in front of them.

Allen was brilliant. Probably his best game in a red shirt. Between him and Sakho for MOTM.

Allen should be given a prolonged run. Wil be him Lucas and Henderson for Spurs, right? Some test for them.

Yeah I thought Allen had a very good game, yesterday, hope he can build on that and put a run of good performances together. Really need him with Gerrard out.

Allen did indeed play very well yesterday, some over the top reaction to it but that is understandable considering the grief he has been given. Long may it continue...

Dont think anyone knows yet. We'll probably know later today or tomorrow. If its a strain he could be back quickly. But I'm dreading 3 weeks or something.

He needed a rest anyway. And in recent season's the team's done okay without him.

I've thought for the last few games were he named anyone else he'd have been dropped.

That's not to denigrate him in any way, but on form alone he hasn't deserved his place, so a few games out to allow him to regain his form may be the best thing.

Also, it enables us to see if we have a functioning midfield without him before January. Cos if we don't then our January shopping list can reflect that & hopefully correct it.

John Aldridge reckoned 4-6 weeks so will be back mid January.

Don't care what people say, id be a lot more confident of getting something from our 3 tough away games if he was playing.

Hence why he shouldn't be playing against West Ham, Hull etc when we have s many important games coming up.

We need to manage him by resting him or playing less minutes each game. Cos the he's been lately isn't got for him or us.

I'm quite optimistic. Because it's always 'Gerrard plus two/three others' in midfield, there's not been much cohesion. This will at least give Rodgers the chance to work on a pattern that will make the whole team get more fluid.

Here's hoping your optimism brings a 4-1 shellacking of Spurs

That clip shows the lie in the oft-repeated claim that Allen is easily brushed off the ball. Stood up to Diame throughout and largely came out on top.

Aldridge is guessing like the rest of us though. He'll probably miss at least Spurs and Cardiff though. Shame as I liked the look of our midfield without Lucas.

In big games yeah, bit conceding against lower placed sides bodes badly for when we play against better sides who can punish you more for mistakes.
Nah, I'm happy with no clean sheets this season, long as we win all our games

The biggest worry with no gerrard is there is zero goals and creativity in a midfield 3 of lucas, hendo and allen. Can any of them step up and impose themselves in midfield? So far we haven't seen it from them and i've never hidden my opinion on them, but if you're gonna do it then away to spurs is a good time against their strong midfield.

If he is out for a few games, I think think we will miss the delivery into the box from free kicks. There is no-one better in the league at this than Gerrard, he whips them in with such accuracy it very often needs just the slightest of touches to end up in the back of the net.

He's played well last few games..marked improvement.

However next Sunday at Spurs will be the test. Lets see if can have a big impact on the game with Sandro and Paulinho s snapping at his heels.

Or that there is no point in an attacking RB passing the ball sideways to the left-sided CM.
