Big D vs Twitter

A tangent to this, but SCM is always good for a tangent....

I grew up with the understanding that America was a fucking big S shape that spanned the two ice caps; South America with all the Spanish (and Portuguese and Welsh) colonised bits, Central America covering what seemed like hundreds of mini states plus Mexico and North America which was pretty simple, the States and Canada.

However any time I suggest a person North of Ohio (or whatever you want to be exact) is an American I damn near get my skull shoved in

So is America == USA and my teachers were ignorant?

I've never heard America being used to describe anything other than the USA. Maybe it's technically the name of the whole landmass comprising North, Central, and South America, but I've never heard it used that way. So in any kind of normal context your old understanding was wrong.

ahhh technically :-D

I do tend to use that argument a touch myself

I assume the same principal describes why I am obviously not European :-D

You're not wrong. However its now referred to as The America's rather than simply America.

The latter has been claimed much like the Gulf of Mexico as the USAs to use as they please.

I guess it'd be like calling Irish people British since technically Ireland is a part of the British Isles, or something. Somewhat plausible, but they might not necessarily appreciate it.
