I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term that...it does a lot of damage.

For me it's overuse/inappropriate use of the term and the concept which can be damaging, rather than the term and the concept as such. Incidentally they predate the rise of the New Age movement (a much better candidate for such condemnation IMO) by some decades.

I'm not sure that Normandy in troubled France is a safe haven at present, either in a personal security or economic sense.

I think, for whatever challenges France has now and may have chronically had, it's not contemporary America.
I used to visit the States at least annually since childhood. Grew up within a couple hundred kilometers of the border. Tons of great places I'd still love to go to. Don't expect I'll be crossing the border anytime soon and relieved to be setting down roots in a place more than 1500km from the border.
There are so many parallels to what happened here in the 30s - it's truly frightful.
