Big Jack putting God under pressure

I was watching a programme about him a couple of months ago. There was a small backlash from a very small section fans. There was a sign at his first game saying "Go home Union Jack". The backlash didn't last long once the team was doing and people really took to him on a personal level. I was very young so don't remember when he took over but remember a lot of Italia 90 and onwards. Everyone really loved watching Ireland back then. It was great. They should put a statue of him at Landsdowne Road.

Apparently they announced the news of his appointment on Gay Byrne's Late Late Show - the show Billy Connolly always said was so weird to be on because half the audience seemed to be nuns - and there was just a silence. Mind you, they could have just been asleep.

Or actual nuns who had taken a vow of silence.

The story that the BBC are running about the audience with the Pope is priceless.
Meeting the Pope
Although his appointment as Republic of Ireland manager was not universally welcomed, Charlton won the hearts of the Irish people as his side reached their first major tournament - Euro 88 - before qualifying for their first World Cup finals in 1990.

Before the Republic's quarter-final against Italy in Rome in 1990, the team were granted an audience with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.

Charlton was referred to as "The Boss" by the Pope
"I thought we'd go into a room, he'd come in and bless the lads and say a few prayers and we'd take some photos," Charlton said in an interview.

"But the audience chamber holds 7,000 and there were people from all over the world there."

The lengthy ceremony took its toll on Big Jack who was trying (and failing) to stay awake.

"The Pope was on the third bit of his blessing and he was looking right at me. I thought he was waving at me so I stood up and waved back."

What is,or was, Nighthawks?

They had a fully functioning bar on the set. And they miked you up, had you drinking along with other guests and random punters who were just getting pissed, and you didn't know when you were on camera and audible and when you were just chatting to someone getting drunk. It was mental.

It made entertaining watching though at times.

Consider a pen thrown in your direction 🙂

I actually despise Dunphy, but on this one topic I'm afraid I agree with him ... unpopular as that opinion is.
For all Dunphy slagged off Charlton he always neglected that fact that he was sitting beside Giles at RTE who had an excellent selection of players prior to JC and achieved sweet FA.
