Since January we've spent 35+24+16(19) = £75m on three players.

Its quite refreshing to see the quality over quantity approach we've traditionally adopted, the above would have got rafa 3 times as many players. ( i appreciate Torres and babel facilitated the above)

Any way, will it last, can we afford that marquee signing this summer? Or will it be a case of downing, wickham and enrique? ( which would still see a relatively large outlay for three players)

I don't see a marquee signing turning up this summer, we've got too much expensive deadwood that will be shipped out, leaving a few too many holes In the squad to plug, whilst reducing the bloated wage bill.

I dont think we'll spend more than we do on the mooted downing fee over course of the summer window.

So we've spent 10m in reality. Big spenders?

Voice of reason.

Is it a bit mental if I'm thinking that we won't buy until we sell a couple of players?
I'm not saying that we're strapped for cash, just saying that we've already got a large wage budget and a squad that needs to be reduced.

I can't believe we spent 35 m on Carrol...
We could of had a top player for that amount.

[/quote]

We spent £35m on Carroll because we got £50m for Torres. If we had got £40m then we would have spent £25m. The price was dependent on what we got from Chelsea.

Mata cost the same as Downing by all accounts, with Di Maria also mentioned at 19M.

What? Where? Sign him now if so.

Yeah, that's the argument that was trotted out. It's also fucking ridiculous.

Di Maria was signed for 25mil and played a big part for Madrid last season, he wouldnt be sold and especially not for a 6mil loss

Do we even have big money to spend?
What is big money?
Call me mistrusting but I don't trust any American owner when they mention spending money, LFC's net spend over the last 5yrs surely can't have been more much more than what we have been spent under Moore's. Now there's talk of Selling Meireles to fund other signings or is it actually money we spent on Henderson? I have no idea but don't like this one bit and yet to see any firm delieverables from the current set of American owners too, still no firm plans on Stadium and all the lovely exciting signings talked about 2 months ago are looking very unlikely. But as long as they don't put more debt on us then guess should be gratefull.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish is keeping a close eye on the situation at Real Madrid with regards to the future of winger Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria enjoyed a successful debut season at the Bernabeu, however according to reports in Marca, he has infuriated Real Madrid bosses by going public about wanting a pay rise at the club.

The 23-year-old who is currently on duty with the Argentina national side ahead of the Copa America tournament, was heavily linked with a move to the Premiership last summer with Manchester United, but he decided to join Jose Mourhino at Real Madrid for £20million.

Whilst on international duty, Di Maria said: "I'm anxiously waiting for the renewal. I was told upon arrival that if I did well in the first year, I was going to improve my contract. I am nervous about waiting for this."

It is believed the Spanish giants will listen to offers for Di Maria if they are able to sign Brazilian star Neymar, who is on the verge of agreeing at deal in the Spanish capital.

That has opened the door for Reds manager Dalglish to make an offer. Liverpool are desperate to acquire a natural winger, having lost out to rivals Manchester United for the signature of Ashley Young.

Both Dalglish and Liverpool's director of football Damien Comoilli feel Di Maria will be the perfect solution in their quest to find some natural width, and feel he will be able to create chances for strikers Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, as well as chipping in with goals himself.

During his first season at Real Madrid, Di Maria made 53 appearances in all competitions and scored nine goals while proving 20 assists.

I think we've got a FAR greater chance of getting Mata than Di maria.

and im not even remotely confident we'd get Mata....

I'm not being obtuse but why is it "fucking ridiculous"? Newcastle knew we were selling for a high figure and we needed a replacement and it was all last minute. So we were not in the strongest bargaining position on price for Carroll.

tbf mate the way you put it actually makes a bit of sense, but JWH's claim was that it was the other way round - we basically forced chelsea to pay whatever newcastle accepted for carroll plus a £15m mark-up, which sounds almost laughably unlikely to me. but if all you were saying was that our situation inflated carroll's price then i agree with you.

when you think about it...Henderson and caroll 50 million. Jesus fucking christ!

I remember being shocked to hear about Shearer for 3.5 million or whatever it was... Football is insane these days. Transfer fees! I remeber about the same time being stunned to hear Lentini to Milan for 14 million in the 90s - another that sticks in my mind. And he was shit too.

Indeed!

When we signed Dean Saunders in 1991 that was for a British record fee - it was 2.9 million.
A few years after that we also broke the record for a teenager when we bought Mark Kennedy, and that was only 1.5 million!!!!

I had high hopes for Mark Kennedy god damn it.

Where can you possibly go from here? Million pound a month footballers not far off and insane transfer fees become the norm, players detached from reality on 50 grand a week at 17, thinking real life is like a rap video.

I wouldn't be surprised if some players somewhere are already getting a million pounds a month, especially if you throw in bonuses, sponsorship deals etc.
