Biggest Disappointments XI of the last 20 years

Status
Not open for further replies.
He's 28 and hasn't been good for four years.
He has not played has he ? and when he has played or was playing regularly little to no negativity was attributed to his performances for us. Point is he lost his place to TAA and Klopp prefers atracking fullbacks, thats not the players fault.

Never played at his best for Liverpool, choose instead to save it for Real Madrid

Also add to the list Marko Grujić... Had a great pre-season and when down hill from there

What the fuck ?, Arbeola never played at his best ? Its because he was good that Real Madrid wanted him, and as for Grujic, he hardly played for us, in some cases because of CL qualifying needs young kids like him cannot be risked for the first team. I would like to see at least 5 to 6 full games given to him to judge if he is gonna be a total dissapointment.

It doesn't matter what the reason is. To be very good in your early twenties and then irrelevant during what should be your prime is disappointing - whether it's down to injury, lack of opportunity or secret suspensions.

That's a very fine list, although I'm not sure Andy really had that great a reputation, nor did Joe Allen (ignoring Rodgers) really. No idea about Ilori.

Of course, I like it because you have included one of my very first bete noires - the utterly fucking useless cunt that was Chris Kirkland.

Signed after a gloriously rubbish season with his relegated club Coventry, in a classic case of "busy goalkeeper in a shit defence can make some good saves because he has to make about 30 a match". And sure enough, he did against us, as we fucking murdered them about 4-0 at Anfield, with Heskey running riot. And he made a good save, after letting in 4.

And so Houllier and Liverpool, in a classic bit of utter fuckery, first signed Jerzy Dudek for a record fee, and then broke their own transfer record FOR A PLAYER WHO PLAYS IN THE SAME POSITION - IN THE SAME FUCKING WEEK - and made Kirkland the most expensive goalkeeper in British transfer history.

And he was young! And English! And his fucking Dad put a bet on that he would play for England one day when Chris was in the womb or some shit.

And he was fucking SHITE. And don't get me started on his bad back, or "luck with injuries". The only "luck" involved in his injuries was that he had so many, and therefore didn't play for us very often. Lucky us.

He was slow as fuck. He couldn't kick a ball more than 10 yards. He had all the agility of an arthritic panda. He looked like a goalie, because he was skinny and rangy and gormless, but he was utterly, UTTERLY fucking useless. He had one of the worst shot:save ratios in recorded history; essentially, anything hit at a moderate pace that wasn't directly at him, was a goal.

He dived for shots like a fucking war-time lookout that had been shot out of a fucking tree.

And then we have that derby game. Lee Carsley scoring the winner with a goal that could have been stopped if we'd let someone from the crowd run onto the pitch after he'd hit it, and make the save.

The first Liverpool player I really quite hated because he was just so fucking shit, and everyone seemed blind to just how shit he was, apart from me.

What a rant!! He was rubbish though. That Carsley goal was abysmal.

I looked at his wiki to make sure his signing was within the last 20 years, he barely made it.

I'd be open to dropping Joe Allen for Naby.

Clyne is in my team for two reasons mainly:

1. There weren't many other right backs that I had high hopes for and subsequently failed to live up to them

2. He started so promisingly, but his career has fizzled out to the point where people forget he even exists.

He should have achieved more. And for that reason he's a big disappointment.

If Grujic was up to it he would be playing, or at least be in the match day squad
And yes Arbeola played well for us, but he saved his best football for Real...

Well i can understand the secret suspensions being a dissapointment, but the other two, you are being a bit too unfair.

Karius

Clyne
Lovren
Sakho
Moreno

Aquilani
Keita
Luis Alberto

Babel
Benteke
Gonzalez

Babel was "ok" for us, but I was expecting so so much more.

Alberto I suppose more retrospective, as for Lazio he's been a revelation

Honourable mentions to the much hyped youth products who never cut the mustard for us. Yesil, nemeth, pacheco, suso

Doni

Degen
Coates
Sakho
Moreno

Downing
Aquilani
Allen
Jovanovic

Balotelli
Benteke

These are all players I had fairly high-high expectactions of.

Jovanovic because of his goal scoring record at Anderletch & youtube vids.
Doni because he was a regular at Roma, still only 31 and was a Brazilian national.
Balotelli because he was capable of doing extroadinary things.
Benteke was 1 of the best strikers in the league at the time.
Sakho was the captain of PSG and France's #1 CB
Aquiliani just looked the part.
& Allen was branded the Welsh Xavi

Impossible to tell what's parody here

I mean Aquilani "looked the part" if the part was an in-bred Romany sex pest who lived in a caravan near a beach in Sardinia

Kewell should be in everyone's team. I thought we were signing one of the very best players in the league.

No mention of “Le Gems”.

Even the fucking mention of it riled me - there was us thinking we’d got some diamond and instead we picked up some shite from Ratners.

Le Tellec & Pongolle.

We’ve had some whoppers - Assadi - he just disappeared.

I remember when we were trying to convince ourselves that Jermaine Pennant was a player.

Stewie Downing.... hahahahaha

Milan Baros was going to be better than Michael Owen.

Who was that French winger we signed that won the World Cup - then played one game in like 2 years.

Bernard Diomede.

Houllier's use of a single agent for all those shit French signings reeks of something very bad.

That’s the man.

Good all Wash N’Gog is still kicking around some dodgy Lithuanian league as well.

You had high expectations of Degen? I had him down as utter gash long before we suffered a brainfart and signed him.

Ditto Voronin who hasn't had nearly enough mentions in this thread (I always knew he was rubbish but there were a few who talked him up based on his "partnership" with Shevchenko).

Yeh I remember him looking classy in the CL with Basel & then went on to become Switzerland's #1 RB/WB

Then again he did have a twin didn't he so maybe thinking of the wrong Degen.

Me Too

This is a completely personal list, there were some players (like Markovic and Alberto) who I expected to be shit based on nothing at all

Karius
Ziege Sakho Coates Moreno
Aquilani Keita Şahin
Kewell Keane Cisse

Tough choice between Keane and Benteke but pretty sure I had higher expectations from Keane, Benteke was just a weird signing
Thought Diouf was a bargain after that world cup but Cisse was a bigger disappointment still
Probably an unpopular opinion but I remember Voronin tearing it up in pre-season, I honestly thought he looked better than Torres. Was even prepared to excuse the ponytail. Then proper games started and he was fucking shit

With Balotelli, it was always going to end badly. Remember when Ryan called him our biggest signing ever? Quality

I feel like we should do a review of Ryan's greatest misses.

He called Keita electrifying when we were linked with him.
