Boro face Johnson battle
Winger has big-four chasing him

Middlesbrough face a huge battle to hang onto Adam Johnson this summer, skysports.com understands.

Chelsea and Tottenham are understood to be leading the chase for Johnson, but Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal are all keeping close tabs on him, whilst Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation.

Johnson has just 12 months left on his current deal at The Riverside - and the Sunderland-born wide-man looks unlikely to put pen-to-paper on a fresh contract.

Johnson has told Boro he is keeping his options open, after he rejected their latest offer to renew his deal.

Now Johnson knows that he is being tracked by a host of clubs who are all ready to try and tempt newly-relegated Boro into selling.

Boro do no want to sell their prized assets, but their biggest summer fundraiser was due to be the sale of Stewart Downing, however that is now off until January at the earliest after he had a pin inserted into his broken foot.

And with just a year left on his current deal, Johnson will be free to join whoever he wants this time next year, although Boro will be due compensation.

However, compensation is nearly always well below market value and because of that Boro could be tempted to sell.

Johnson will take part in the European Under-21 Championship this summer, which you can see live on Sky Sports, and he will be keen to impress in Sweden.

How will they get compensation if he is a free agent?

Because he is under a certain age, Boro are compensated for the money and time they have spent developing him.

Adam Johnson (born 14 July 1987 in Horden) is an English footballer, currently playing for Middlesbrough. He is a left-winger but can also play on the right-wing.

Umm he's almost 22 now and will be almost 23 next year?

Maybe its under 25 (although I can't believe that??)

I didn't know he was 22. I rate him a lot but I thought he was 18 or 19.

I suppose El Zhar is still labelled as a kid or a player with potential. Isn't he 24 or something?

he is 22

Is Johnson really that good, or was that story written by his agent? ALL of the top four are after him/monitoring his situation? I guess they scent a bargain, thinking - if he doesn't work out - that they can sell him on for more cash later. I don't really want us to be dispersing our transfer funds on pothibilities though. Just stick to your main targets Rafa.

I saw quite a bit of him 2 seasons ago when he was on-loan at Watford and he stood out like a sore thumb - he was way too good for the Champioship level. His progress has been difficult to follow since because Boro never really gave him a run of consecutive matches in his favoured position wide on the left.

From what I've seen he looks like he has bags of potential and could be good enough to feature regularly for a top 4 team.

Put it this way, if I had a choice of us signing Downing or Johnson for the same fee I would choose Johnson.

Johnson would be a long term type project, he is English and would need some time

i'd be happy getting him if the price was right because of the quota and he has performed at u-21 level. I saw him when England got beat by the french u21 side and he was their best player, went round players a lot but just lacked a bit of a cutting edge.. can't say there are many English players like him
