Quite often you have players who are great footballers but not blessed with the natural ability of top athletes. They probably wont cut it at top sides these days, I think.

Its certainly is more physically demanding now but football is one of those rare sports where there isnt really a physical type that appears to be the ideal in the way there are for other sports like basketball or rugby, goalkeepers I guess are the easiest to categorise but aside from that you see a wide variety of body shapes in football. Taking the two best players in the world right now as Ronaldo and Messi they are completey different physically, you caould argue Messi doesnt appear to be a natural athlete at all, the same could be said of Rooney too
Granted with Messi his outrageous talent bridges the gap but football throws up all sorts of players even at the highest level

There's a huge amount of variation in Rugby players.
In fact their are in most sports. I wouldn't argue football was unique in that respect at all.

I would say rugby players conform to a type more so than footballers, the variations tend to be more positional. Your right football isnt unique in that respect but its certainly not the sort of sport where you can look at a guys physique and tell whether or not he will make it because football is so much a skill rather than strength or speed based game

That's true but the competition is getting fiercer all the time and that's why there are fewer and fewer of these 'non-athletes' in football. The margins of making or not making it can be so small these days. Of course the special talents like Messi or Ronaldinho will always make it but there are also a lot of these skillful players who would have been stars in the 90's but now can only make mediocre careers for themselves.

Well having some idea of a player's age and thus career stage should have some bearing, so yes, I'd think so. If Adam was 28-29 I'd think of him very differently, I'm sure.
The description of him as 'mediocre', despite Adam's record of a goal to every four games, usually playing as a deep lying playmaker, is a lazy, ill-informed assessment. His assist record is better still. He clearly isn't 'mediocre'. I've followed his progress closely for years, and thought he was badly treated at Rangers, and suffered from Barry Ferguson's return to the club. I watched out for him with Blackpool in the Championship and he seemed to pull MOM performances every week. Anyone who watched him pull the strings for Blackpool against City this season couldn't fail to be impressed. Players that steam-rollered us couldn't get near him. I think he's a class act, and I always have. Anyone who thinks Poulson or Lucas is a better option than him is frankly mental.
