Some observations:
- Isak’s movement without the ball is far more sophisticated than Ekitike’s. Hugo is mostly asking for the ball to feet and then trying to do something with it; Alex is looking for spaces and moments and letting his teammates and the ball find him. He is also forcing Gakpo to vary his game by purposefully drifting into his space, so that Gakpo has to play through the middle at times, occupying positions he hasn’t seen much since Klopp. Early signs are just as I hoped - Isak will be a catalyst for our attack who will tie all the different elements together.
- For the first time I’m starting to see the contours of Slot’s plan for Wirtz. Slot always favoured a 4-man press up front (unlike Klopp’s clear 3 + 3 structure), so without the ball Wirtz is definitely a part of the front 4, which is expected. But in possession it is starting to look like the German is a part of a midfield triangle rather than an untethered free #10. Whenever Wirtz shifted to the right flank, one of Szobo or Gravenberch shifted to the corresponding position on the left and vice versa. They are starting to work as a midfield unit and that looks a lot more cohesive. It’s also worth mentioning that Szobo played a more disciplined defensive midfield role for large parts of the game, which allowed Gravenberch to express himself.
- Gravenberch is just a monster. Wow. Again, I have to mention the contract - the sooner we tie him up the better, because the thought of Real Madrid or Barca potentially getting him on a free in a few years makes me sick to my stomach. Now that Wirtz is showing the signs of integration into the midfield 3, it looks like we have a situation of 2 near certain starters (Gravenberch and Wirtz) and the 3rd spot being up for grabs between Szobo, Alexis and Jones. Slot’s challenge will be to construct a Gravenberch-less midfield in certain games when he needs to be rested.
- The left flank looks so much more flowing and natural with Robbo in there. Kerkez has time on his side, but for now there is absolutely no reason not to play Robbo for as long as he can manage. On the opposite side I think there is lots of work to be done with both Frimpong and Bradley - both are looking decent enough, but there is so much more to come.
- Respect to Atletico players who stuck to their tasks despite a nightmare start and did not let the Anfield atmosphere affect them. That was a quality away performance. That being said, there was nothing lucky about our win, despite leaving it late - we dominated for big periods of the game, created a lot more chances than the opponent and fully deserved the win. This was the first game of the season where our football was genuinely enjoyable to watch.
