That's a weird take Modo. The glass ¼ full take.

Gravy : not what happened.
Szobo : we can say that about any player to any team.
Macca : break clause for a WC winner. Far more than a 'Steady Eddie'.
99% of players would take Barca or Real over anyone else.
Gravy: How do you explain the price tag then and the fact that Bayern wanted to sell?

Szobo: We paid 60-70 mill for a young player from the German version of Newcastle/Tottenham. We didn't have any real competition from other teams. Maybe mentioning Barca was over the top.
It's not like we signed a PL proven player. I knew that Szobo was good, so I personally wasn't worried, but it could just as well have been another Nunez.

Macca: Proven PL player for a good price. Yes he is a World cup player, but he wasn't a superstar every team in England or Europe were pining for.

I want us to finish above United just to get one over the hypercrit Ratcliff, CL would be a bonus as part of that.

All I’m saying is it’s possible. Look at Chelsea and Utd. The whole players don’t come because of lack of CL is exaggerated
It's possible, but I don't think we'd be willing to overpay like united and Chelsea would.

It certainly would eliminate us from the highest tier of players for me. We could still get very good players or players about to click; just not excellent ready made ones

It's a shame we're shit this season, it's absolutely there for the taking. Like last season. Getting 90-odd points and finishing second (twice) was heartbreaking, we should be walking the league this year. Arsenal are absolute shite and they're still 15 points ahead of us.

Chelsea stock pile players but they seldom overpay imho. Utd have seen a shift in their approach bar Sesko. Mbuemo might have been overpriced but he has been worth it for them.

We don't buy players from the highest tier anyway. That hasnt been our model. We buy in a certain age group and from a specific profile.
I've got no doubt that they would come regardless.

Would you describe Isak and Wirtz being in the highest tier?

I'm usually a pessimist but I don't think a single season out of the CL will stop players from coming.

In their minds they'll be thinking, look Liverpool has qualified for the Champions League 7 of the last 9 years. They won the league two seasons ago. So there's at least a 80% chance that they can get back in next season if we revert to mean.

I think the choice of manager will probably be more important. They wont be tripping over themselves to play for Arne Slot.

Players will look at a number of factors : salary, our roster, the club, CL opportunity, liklihood of winning trophies, their likely playing time, manager, can they improve at the club, location, visibility etc.

We'll rate very highly on almost all metrics. The odd player may not fancy Slot but it won't be many and even those they may feel he won't be here next season anyway. There are very few managers that hold serious sway or are more then a footnote : Klopp, Pep, Mourinho etc.
