Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will leave it up to Pedro Neto to decide whether he is in the right state of mind to play following the death of Diogo Jota. Blues winger Neto missed the final training session in the build-up to the Club World Cup quarter final with Palmeiras after learning of the death of Portugal teammate Jota and his brother Andre.

But Maresca has offered his full support while Marc Cucurella also said it could be “destiny” for Neto to score and dedicate the goal to his late friend. Maresca said: “Pedro is very sad. Probably more than sad, but we are close to Pedro, to support him in this morning.

“It’s completely Pedro’s decision, I had a chat this morning we support him, any decision he takes is the right one, we will support him in any case. If on pitch tomorrow or not, we will support him.

“It’s very sad day I struggle find words, it’s very difficult, the feeling that you have is helpless in this situation. Only thing I can say is all my love for his family, a big tragedy.”

Cucurella added: “In the morning he was sad and it was not his best moment. But we tried to stay together and in the afternoon he was a bit better and I told him that if he’s going to play then he will score because that is destiny.

“Hopefully we can show his love and all the good friends that we are and dedicate the goal to him.

"The manager and he must decide but it’s important that Pedro feels good, football is secondary but it’s a long day tomorrow and whatever they decide will be good. But right now he’s a player in form and I think Pedro can help us in this game.”

Cucurella also revealed how the Chelsea squad rallied round Jota after the heartbreaking news as he also offered his deepest sympathies. He added: “It’s a bad moment, we send all our love to the family, the wife, the kids, and I do it from me, the whole Chelsea squad and football.

“Football is not important at times like this. The most important thing is that we show respect an all our love.

“I saw it as soon as I woke up. It was a difficult moment because these things can happen to all of us in any moment and then you start to think if you don’t feel good, or you don’t give 100 per cent, or feel bad when these things happen it’s important to be happy and life live every day.

“The morning was a bit difficult, you don’t feel good or have the energy to play but tomorrow is a good moment to show all the love, all the respect because I think he enjoyed playing football and scoring football. That’s why this will be a good opportunity to show on the pitch which is where he felt good.”

Liverpool have cancelled the phased return of players for pre-season training as they continue to mourn the death of forward Diogo Jota.
The first group of Arne Slot‘s squad were scheduled to attend the club’s AXA training complex on Friday for the opening round of physical tests after their summer break.

However, the PA news agency understands that has been postponed as the club deals with the aftermath of the shocking tragedy which saw 28-year-old Jota and his brother Andre Silva killed in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of Thursday.

They'll be back on Monday instead.

Translation from Japanese text in the same tweet:

My Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, passed away in a traffic accident the other day.

Jota and I would often sit together at the dinner table talking about football, our families, and games.

On the pitch, his composure in front of the goal and his skill at shooting were second to none.

I still can't believe he's gone, but the wonderful times I spent with him at Liverpool are irreplaceable memories for me.

It's still difficult for me to come to terms with my own feelings, but we'd like to do all we can to support the families of both of them.

I offer my deepest condolences on the loss of both of them.

He was a brilliant finisher. I can't remember what his shots to goals ratio was when we signed him but it was something silly. It's a shame injuries were massively affecting his game time because he would have scored a tonne with Wirtz supplying the chances

Jose is two people to me. When he’s attached to a football club, especially when they’re not doing great, he’s an awful loser, very childish and extremely toxic.

When he’s infront of a camera as a pundit or in situations like this he’s klopp-like. Very charismatic, nice words from him as you’d expect.

He's an ultra competitive wind up merchant.

I was just talking to my brother about Jota, and he said he couldn’t think of another footballer at Jota’s level who’s died while still active.

He's right, isn't he?

That was so beautiful and personal, but that's to be expected because it's his best friend.
They're both from the Porto area and have followed eachother basically everywhere during their careers. Both played for Porto and then went to Wolves together. Played for Portugal youth teams together as well and finally the senior team.
Just saw the start of the Al Hilal game and both Neves and Cancelo looked absolutely wrecked. They're playing for their friend tonight.
