Opposite of doc's thread - players we missed out on that we tried to sign (or were seriously interested in) to that were big mistakes ...

The one that sticks out to me for me is Ronaldo ... Ronaldo instead of Le Tallent and Cinema-Popcorn and the last few years would have been different.

From the 80s - Laudrup.

Eriksen and Dele Alli. I know the latter is a diving rat now but I blame his boss. The fact that they both wanted to come here does my head in .

Wasn't Ronaldo nearly a thing pre Utd?

Alves getting shafted for Pennant and whoever was a biggy.

Aguero.
He claimed he was a fan before going to Atletico and I think he confirmed it since.
Rafa decided he was too much of a risk I think

His thread is about players YOU wanted us to sign but they went elsewhere and turned out shit.
So the opposite and probably a bit more interesting thread would be about players you were happy we missed out on but they turned out to be really good.

Mine is Dani Alves. Hurts even more because we got fucking Tennants instead

I'm positive we were linked to Vidic before he went to united. Same with David villa when he was at Zaragoza

I always remember the links that make me sad

Jaysus- look at this- great players, but what a pair of cunts we'd have had at CB:

Liverpool could have lined up with a defence consisting of Petr Cech, Gerard Pique and John Terry - if Liverpool had been successful in their pursuits.
Former scout Alex Miller - who also served as first-team coach during a near-decade of service at Anfield - has lifted the lid on some of the near-misses his former club made in the transfer market, with three European Cup winners amongst those who the reds missed out on.

Though it has been well-documented how Liverpool - then managed by Gerard Houllier - failed to agree a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo during his formative years at Sporting Lisbon, there were others who could have been playing on Merseyside.
Speaking to ESPN, Miller said: "I looked at Gerard Pique and I tried to get him. The Spanish delegation he was with at a youth tournament, I think it was his grandfather who was the delegate for the Spanish federation.
"Well he wouldn't give me permission because I think Man United were already in at that point.

"I brought Cristiano Ronaldo (as a suggestion). That's water under the bridge, but I recommended him and saw him at a youth tournament."
Both Pique and Ronaldo would move to Manchester United, before moving to Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, where they have lifted six Champions League titles between them.

Pique was wanted at Liverpool
Two of Chelsea's European heroes - Cech and Terry - were also on Liverpool's radar at different times.
The Scot revealed the innovative method he implemented to approach Terry in 2003, although the centre-back would snub interest and remain at Stamford Bridge for the following 14 years.

"I tried to get John Terry to come," the Scot said. "It was 2003 when Chelsea beat Liverpool for the last place in the Champions League.
"It went to the final day and they beat us at Stamford Bridge. After the game I went to speak to John Terry to try and get him. How I did it was, I went up to him in the corridor and asked him for his autograph. He said yes. As he was signing it I said: 'Could you put your mobile phone number? Gerard Houllier would like to talk to you'.
"He put his agent's number and said to talk to him. Gerard Houllier spoke to his agent on the bus. I think he just used us to get more money out of Chelsea.

"I also had Petr Cech, but at that moment in time we were trying to sign Chris Kirkland. I went to a game to watch Milan Baros and Petr Cech was making his debut.

"I then went to Argentina, I think it was in 2001, the Under-20 World Cup. You could have got him for a song. He was with Chmel Blsany and then he moved to Sparta Prague and then he moved to France."
But Miller did admit he turned down Diego Forlan, who would prove to be scourge of Liverpool down the years, scoring twice at Anfield for Manchester United and playing a huge part in the Reds' Europa League elimination to Atletico Madrid in 2010.
He added: "Diego Forlan, I turned him down before United even got to him. At the final hour when United were going to sign him, Gerard Houllier asked me whether I was sure. I was positive he would be more suited to Spain or Italy."

Definitely vidic. He said so in a interview today. Apparently we took so long that when manure came he went there as they did the deal in 2 days. Whereas we were taking ages. Rafa kept trying to assure him that the deal was getting done. I can see now why rafa was so frustrated.

Though I think the alternative to Vidic was Agger who didn't work out too badly.
