Doing too much?

It's still june and we're already close to winning the transfer window trophy, while we're definitely getting a CB and a striker as well. I'm worried because transfer window trophy winners usually win fuck all when the ball actually gets kicked. Everton, Spurs and West Ham have lots of these in their cabinets

Last night thieves broke into the Everton trophy room and made off with the carpet.

The minute we start selling Konate, Robbo, Diaz, Darwin, Jota, Gomez, Quansah & Elliot all in one window… that’s when you say good bye to retaining the Premier League - which is why we won’t do it.
It's starting to look like 4-5 of those players are leaving.

Worst case, all of them except Jota.

I think we're looking at 4 departures from that lot along with Chiesa, Morton and possibly Tsimikas

Quansah - gone to Leverkusen
Elliott - as good as gone
Darwin - as good as gone

Diaz - 50:50, although the latest rumours imply he could be off
Robbo - more likely to stay with the Atletico move off the table (although Tsimikas wants to stay as backup so who knows)

Gomez - sounds like staying for sure
Konate - staying, probably holding out for Madrid on a free next year if we can't agree a new contract (I think he'll sign)
Jota - staying, stock too low to sell

The Konate - Gomez situation is a bit uncertain.
If we sign Guehi and Konate stays, will Gomez want to hang around and be fourth choice?

it’s difficult to know, imo his stock has decreased over the last season to something akin to late liverpool sturridge or AOC

if that’s the case his other options might not be so great

He was the 4th choice CB for the best part of the last 2 seasons, I see him more as a versatile cover for the whole back four. And his body is unable to cope with much more than that anyway so he might as well stay and win a few trophies along the way

I have no problem at all unloading those above with certain provisos :

VvD, Konate, Guehi are the CB mainstays (with 4 comps there are lots and lots of minutes for all three).

Gomez is excellent cover across the back four. He'll get plenty of time, if he stays fit, in all 4 competitions. Stays and hopes he can add to his amazing trophy haul !

Robbo as backup to Kerkez (or Tsimi - both great in the dressing room but we don't need both so one must go).

Diaz : I'd prefer to keep him and I believe we will, bar a massive £85m bid from the Saudis. We'll likely then get a replacement but the turnover of starting players is becoming too much as this stage.

Darwin & Jota. Still a big question mark here. I think both will work well with Wirtz if playing more in the box. We don't yet have an acceptable bid for Darwin and he's worth a fair bit (25 goals is 0.26 + 13 Assists = 38 G/A from 49 starts and 46 subs), I wouldn't be accepting pennies on the pound unless we have Isak inbound. I also wouldn't pay £100m for the likes of Ekitike etc. Jota likely to stay anyway?

Quansah & Elliot : both gone as far I'm concerned and based on their minutes that won't affect us.

Overall, if as above, then that isn't a high turnover and we've greatly improved the starting team. Strengthened at LB & RB (based on last season), much stronger at AM/10/`MF. Stronger CB depth. Great replacement for Kelleher.

I know I could've posted this in one of the many transfer threads, but I'm an attention whore so here we are.

Why did we win the league? Or more specifically, what was one of the key reasons behind our success?

In my opinion, and I reckon many of you will agree, it came down to having a settled side. A core group of players who’ve played together for over six years, alongside three or four smart additions who slotted in almost instantly.

We don’t have any big-time Charlies or diva energy. No Balotelli, no Zlatan types. Just a cohesive, grounded squad that is riddled with players who captain their respective countries.

We’ve had a lot of welcome movement in the transfer window, and honestly, I’ve got no complaints about the signings so far. Frimpong, Wirtz, Kerkez, and Mamardashvili all feel like the right moves.

But here’s the thing: I’m worried we might be doing too much. I see people calling for us to sell Gomez and Jota, and we’re already letting go of Harvey, Núñez, and Chiesa (I don't mind the two latter). Now there are even strong rumors that Robbo wants out. This is looking less like Slot making tweaks, and more like a full-blown squad overhaul.

I know that I was previously adamant that Gomez wants to leave, or that we should sell Konaté because he might join Real for free, but in all honesty, we should do our utmost to try to keep both of them.

So going back to my original point: if our settled squad was a major factor in last season’s success, shouldn't we be doing everything we can to preserve that core? I get it—if certain players want to leave, there’s only so much we can do. But we definitely shouldn't be the ones showing them the door.
I agree, although it is true we are strengthening, which is what we should do, we've certainly lost our squad familiarity now. We will miss Djota and we will miss Diaz should Bayern follow through, i'm delighted with Wirtz being added but we've thinned out defensively and lost a key attacker as well... It's interesting... one of key strengths last year was the settled unity of the team...please God it pans out well.

The moves we're making are all necessary but arguably should've been done piecemeal over the last couple seasons.

The title last season was unexpected bonus. The title / CL would feel the same this season. I'm expecting a transition year.
I agree, although Klopp left us with Gravy, Szobo and Macca.
We could have 7-8 new players by the start of the season. That's almost half the first team.

We could have that many but I’d expect us to line up against Bournemouth like this.

Alisson
Bradley
Konate
Van dijk
Robertson
Gravenberch
Wirtz
Mac Allister
Salah
Isak/Ekitike
Gakpo

Subs: New guy, new, guy, new guy, new guy, Jones, Szobo, new guy.

Wirtz, Ngumoha or new guy. I'm hearing good things about the latter.
still struggling to get my head around next seasons formation given who we're signing. big money for ekitekkers to sit on the bench any chance he's on the left?

funny how we used to have a load of players for the left, new guy sounds necessary

I don't see that.

I see Kerkez (upgrade on every level), Wirtz (world class and a definite upgrade), Isak (definite upgrade at CF) and maybe Ekitike at LW (though more likely Gakpo starts). That's 3-4 starters with 3 absolutely upgrades.

The spine (and so most of our star players) is the same : Ali, VvD, Konate, Gravy, Macca and Salah.

With a full pre-season I'm not worried in the slightest re. integrating the new players, in fact it's NOT getting in another new player, Guehi, that worries me the most - it's gone very quiet on that front.
