Doing too much?

One positive is Slot has relevant experience in this aspect (loads of changes in personnel at one instance)

New lads were great today. It’s the others that slipped up today.

Hugo did really well first half but ballooned 2 big chances 2nd half. Wirtz is a quality link up player but he'll fade in and out of games. Kerkez looks rash in the challenges and one that'll take the most time to adapt to a new role which Arne commands from his LB.

Only Frimpong I've been really impressed by.

Thought Kerkez was weird all afternoon, like he was trying too hard to be very conservative in his game but then happened drift fuck knows where every now and then

I am glad we didn't win it, the cup has some hoodoo on it.
The important thing is Slot has seen the weakness in defence. CJ is not a #6 and Endo does not suit our style. Thankfully we have Badge and Trey, its upto Slot to improve them

Partially, but if still put it more on vvd. Where was he going? He was massively out of position and much too high

Because Gakpo had the ball and he was pushing the team out? Not having a back 4 in sync is parts of the problem with 2 new guys there. The push out and setting the line is what takes time for a new defence.

I agree it takes time, but why is Virgil not only moving forward, but moving to the right, leaving a huge gap? Even if the line moved forward, he would have walked straight in to Konate and still left a huge gap. Usually one of the cm might drop back at little as well and push vvd and Konate slightly wider. But vvd went narrow? There isn't a world where van dijks movement was what we usually do on breaks

Attacking down the left kerkez absolutely would have bombed forward to help support, but he was slow to join.

Positionally he was all over the place yesterday, and that's not down to 2 new full backs.

If the system requires Kerkez to tuck in with Gakpo racing back to cover literal acres of space in the LB position, it's a terrible system.

I don't know what the fuck was going on with our left side yesterday but it was shit and we need to sort it out because we'll get cut open time and again playing like that.

Pre-season friendly is bullshit. It's not. It's a season opener and a trophy (however minor). Ditto the Super Cup or whatever the fuck it's called.

We've spent a huge amount on a luxury signing - that's great - but there remain gaping holes in the squad with a tough opening set of fixtures a week away. There is still time to do what we need to do but really we need a CB, a replacement for Diaz and - let's just be real here - a replacement for Endo.

Kerkez tucks in at times when Frimpong is advanced and we have possession.
He doesn't tuck in when we haven't got the ball, so don't blame the system imho.

We should definitely not start Robbo. Kerkez is our new starting left back and played a solid game bar the issue he and Gakpo had in terms of Munoz bombing forward. I think thats got more to do with Sarr/Munoz then our system, and an issue you face when playing against a 3-4-2-1. It also gets more exposed when the players arent in sync yet and the communication is a bit off.
We should definitely continue with what Slot feels will be a a settled back 4.

Easy to forget that the back 4/5 played its first game together yesterday.

I'd be surprised if Robbo starts on Friday.
As said Kerkez had a good game bar the issue with Munoz/Gakpo. Probably saves a goal at the end with that excellent block as well. Great cross for Salah that nearly won us the game.

Milos Kerkez vs Crystal Palace today:
- 100% tackles won (1/1)
- 100% dribbles completed (2/2)
- 2/3 accurate crosses
- 6/9 duels won
- 7 passes into the final third
- 3 recoveries

Those stats don't show the huge expanse of space that was getting left for them to kick start their attacks. It may be a system issue but I people are right to question his positioning at key moments. It's great having all the pace and energy in the world, but some in-game nous also need to change starting position or drop back if we're getting exposed.

Robbo is absolutely fucking shite though.

Do you need reminding of Fulham at home? Southampton away? Madrid at home? Fulham away was the single worse defensive performance I saw last season.....& we had fucking Trent!!!

Robbo has credit in the bank though

Don’t think people give Slot enough credit for how good a coach he is, in all honesty.

At Feyenoord, Slot oversaw a massive rebuild after his first season. Signed 13 players and sold 16.
They lost 4 of 6 in preseason, failing to keep a single clean sheet.
Won the league.

We’ll be fine.

I think there's also that thing about accepting you're getting on a bit. There were times last season when he dived in and the old Robbo would have carried it off because he was a yard quicker, but a few years on he can't do that any more. It's that thing about becoming more positionally intelligent, which comes with experience, rather than trying to be physically dominant.
Virgil does it sometimes too, including the penalty yesterday (and the time he got sent off against the Geordies), although with him yesterday it was more likely rustiness after being unwell in the week. What he should have done was shepherd Sarr, not try to dispossess him in a 50:50.
Players should only try to stamp their authority on games / opponents when they are absolutely on it.

True, however... past performance is not indicative of future results.

Hmm do we actually know what his instructions were? I doubt that in the CS he would decide to go walkabout and do his own thing !

I feel that Slot's instructions + VvD being miles off his usual self (not recovered from illness - highlighting our CB problems) are likely more to blame and that it'll get sorted sooner rather than later (teething problems, that won't be worked out of he doesn't start)!

Wait, isn't past performance about as good an indicator of future results as you can get? I mean, it's not a guarantee, but it's a pretty good indicator.
