The Chelsea game wasnt his debut.. it was away against villa..

And Terry didn't play either, one of Ben Haim's first game for Chelsea which was a very short lived Chelsea career

El Nino Article from the Athletic posted in the Athletic sticky
I thought it was interesting when he said that he understands why many Liverpool fans, as he would have done as a fan, hate him, yet it has not changed how much he still loves Liverpool.
I think he is being too polite by not saying he wasn't happy at Chelsea and instead saying he should have moved outside of England after Liverpool instead

Well can't see him getting an ambassador ial role at Chelsea so it's either us or Athletico

Keep telling you guys - when we signed him - I just could not believe it, with the wealth of other clubs at the time that we managed to get this guy. In the times that I had watched him over the years before coming to us - I always thought he was the closest thing that could be the white version of Ronaldo (R9), and he lived up to every expectation when we signed him. In my mind at the time - I always thought of him as a young super-star in the making, so when he joined I was shocked - I kept thinking with all the references on here about him coming - it was just the guys taking the piss much like the idea we will somehow sign Mbappe. That first goal he scored at home - it was surreal to me, as I always worried about how we would break down that fucking ugly Chelsea defense, but this guy just drilled his way right through it.

Rafa secured Torres by following the Ferguson playbook, calling him constantly, esp when he was injured & doing so for a long time.

Great tapping up skills. No way we'd have got him otherwise.

Torres had better physical attributes than Suarez. Torres, to me, was quicker and stronger than Suarez. Torres had immense skill.

Suarez was a phenomenally skilful player. Much better than Torres in that respect but lacked that extra level of pace and power.

If I was to build a striker it would physically be Torres with Suarez’s ability.

Quicker, yes, but there's no way Torres was the stronger of the two (just look at their injury records if you don't believe me). It's a legitimate debate, but I don't think there could possibly be anyone better placed than Stevie to judge the merits of what each brought to the table as a whole package, and his choice is clear.

Going shoulder to shoulder Torres is stronger. Injury record then Suarez wins. Then Torres wins by not being a racist bitey cunt.

As you say, it’s a good debate. I’m sure there is plenty of things about both players we could compare.

A decent watch, bits that came out for me:

Shy but focussed and determined in his ultimate goal till the end.

Broken promises around investment in the team during his time with us.

Comoli’s response to the discussion before the transfer request and how that was managed by the owners and Comoli to look like he was completely at fault.

His special relationship with Gerrard.

Really didn’t get on with Simone in the end.

Regretted pushing himself through injury to make the wc 2010.

Follows on a general regret of making decisions around winning things rather at points rather than special memories when he finished his career. At the end, he valued the memories more.

Forgot how much I love that Nike Torres ad, marketing on the money.

Suarez was the more skillful player but I don't think he was significantly better for us upfront than Torres.

Torres did it time and time again for us against top oppositions on bigger stages, champions league -Inter, Arsenal, Marseille, etc. Suarez did destroy Man Utd when he announced his arrival but Torres did it against a much better Man Utd and much better defense of peak Rio and Vidic.

Torres didn't need Sturridge and Sterling making runs and distracting defenders. He was a one-man defense destroying machine. He was like "Stevie G, just get the ball to me early and watch me destroy the defense on my own".

Some of his performances in his first two years are legendary. After the Chelsea game, we had Reading in the league cup. The defenders were absolutely horrible and were scything him down at every opportunity. He did not clutch his legs and lie on the ground and cry and look at the referee, none of that shit. They knocked him. He got up, smiled and punched them back, scored a hattrick.

He was with us a few years and he was pretty damn amazing, but we didn't win anything while he was here and he left like an absolute fanny, so nope, not a legend. I know it's not down to individuals to win trophies but there's no way I'd stick him in an all time greats list. He forced a move to Chelsea ffs
