Post Match EPL Aston Villa (H) 2-0 8pm Saturday 1st Nov

I missed most of the game yesterday, so I just watched some highlights. I shouldn’t complain because we won, and honestly, if we disregard the first 20 or so minutes, we played well. Even Mo was OK.

But if we're going back to basics, to our old lineup, playing the same players from last season plus Ekitike (who’s about as useless as Nunez and Jota were between Gakpo and Salah), then this transfer window has been a complete disaster.

£400 million spent, with zero improvement, except maybe the keeper, who wasn’t even bought this summer. Ekitike will just be a body up front, he won’t get anything from Salah or Gakpo.

So I know I’m not the most positive poster on this forum, and yes, we just won, but this really irks me.

And where were the subs?! Was he so scared of losing that he couldn’t sub Salah for Chiesa, or maybe Gomez for Bradley, or Kerkez for Robbo? You know, use at least 3 of the 5 subs?

Well yeah Chiesa would have done more pressing higher up the pitch and Endo could have tightened things up and shit yeah... No-one we bought would have made any difference... That said, they will when we drop Salah. This being the year we're not dropping him yet, it makes sense to transition slowly instead of in bulk.

Yeah, it was a much improved performance, but let's not go fellating ourselves. Dreamy's crowing over Salah is, well, typical Dreamy. He was better. But still not great. Let's see if he can improve and do it consistently before we start trying to dish out the "I told you so's".

The second half was more impressive than the first. First half we were cut open a few times, the press was disjointed, we didn't really create anything and we looked nervy at the back. Then we were gifted a goal just before half time. I bet Emery was furious with that as it absolutely changed the game and the respective half time team talks. Had they gone in at the break level, having had a good few chances, then they may have grown in confidence after the break. We might have been nervy and jittery without the comfort of a goal...

Instead it was us that grew in confidence, and we largely controlled the second half. It was like the first half of last season all over again, but it's not like we were peppering them with efforts or carving them open. The second goal came from some good fast interplay, but there was still an element of luck with the deflection. So, a gift and a deflection. A couple of other half chances, particularly Szoboszlai's chance in the first half stands out. But besides that, did we create much?

That said, we looked much more solid. That has to be our first choice defence. I haven't completely written off Kerkez yet, but it's no surprise we look significantly better with Robertson there. I'd like to see Wirtz come in for Gakpoo and see how he does off the left. When Isak is fit, play around with Ekitike starting out there too and Isak through the middle, as we need to get both of them firing soon.

Overall, much improved. A low bar, though. Let's see how we do in the next couple of games. As someone else said, their style of play suited us. Madrid and City may do also. It's when we face the direct long balls again that we will see if Slot has turned the corner. A good start, but we're not out of the woods yet.

Salah was decent by his standards. Very good by other standards.

Digne couldn't cope with him and he was a great outlet, holding up the ball or breaking away. However, his passing was still hit & miss and he dithered before shooting a couple of times plus the now obligatory Row Z shot. The biggest difference

Play to Salahs strengths which means last seasons approach and ease the new expensive signings in slowly.

It’s not that difficult and if we do Salah will show most of you that you’ve written him off yet again too soon.

Easily his best performance of the season and maybe playing on Wednesday gave him that extra amount of fitness.

A few days ago I looked at last seasons MOTM awards and Mac didn’t really feature until mid autumn and then went on to be our best player in terms of votes for the remainder of the season. I hope that the same happens now and he kicks on. I’m disappointed he has to bugger off for the final set on internationals after the City game.
Nah - it's because he wants to be part of the starting line-up against Real Madrid so that he can play the best game of the season and get a transfer to them. Same as Konate.

I thought the keeper played well. Let's face it, Ali is the best there is so tough boots to fill but last night showed why we bought this fella. He's pretty damn good.
I think he has been brilliant if you consider who he is replacing, he has gone about his duties quietly and is always dealing with those long shots very well, that save he made - I doubt Alisson would have put that away, the extra height certainly helps in those situations.

Well I was initially quite pleased with the performance and the much better intensity personified when Macca fist pumped after wrestling the giant Onana when defending a corner. I thought our attitude much improved.

However after reading the posts I've realised that positivity is entirely the wrong emotion and that a sullen ungrateful and don't-get-too excited attitude is the go to feeling. I hope we don't win too many future matches or I'm going to be conflicted.

And less of the team and manager support, it will not do.

I think we also looked good cos we werent pressed so frequently. Great shot stopper but we need to expect less from him in terms of passing

My very limited itk knowledge lets me know Kerkez and family totally get why he was benched and he knows he's here for the hard yards and he's just going to get his head down and improve. My very limited knowledge is due to Kerkez taking a box in the same stand that I've got a few mates who've got a box in this season for his family. The family are very supportive and enthusiastic, they come to all the games whether he's picked or not. Maybe a bit of a Diaz dad energy, but they get he's got to work harder to earn his boots.

Personally, I think this is quite good. We know the talent is there, he was in the pl team of the year last year so it wasn't just my own eye test. We also know we've got a happy family around him who get that this is a growing curve.

That's good to hear. He's got mad bastard energy which is good for a flying fullback if he can learn our style of play

This is very encouraging to hear. I hope he learns from Robbo while he can.

You're right about needing the time and effort to fit into the team, he still looks like the nazi village is missing their idiot though.

Kerkez seriously needs to be cut some slack, some of the criticism has been ridiculously forced......& the same goes for Frimpong quite frankly......who's started just ONE league game. A game which we were heading for a rare clean sheet in despite being up against one of the best wingers in the league.......let's not forget his Utd cameo where he created an absolute sitter for that lanky twat who can't header a ball, or his contribution that led us to winning at Burnley.....he was on the pitch for 10mins combined. Defended his side superbly in his only other start in the PL/CL against Atleti, before Bradley came on and put up under pressure with his rashness. You have fans that'd rather defend 14 losses since 1st Feb, it's a joke.

I was in Budapest not long after they'd left the soviet bloc and I was in a pub with some locals chatting about the history of the place and we got to the bottom of it. They were like imagine Liverpool was just doing it's own thing, vibrant, important, trade, culture etc... but then Wales invaded and they were all cunts and raped all your women and killed all your dads and then tortured everyone else, that was the Nazis. Then 12 years later you are liberated by Manchester, and everyone is in the streets crying with joy but they rape all the women and kill all the new dads and torture everyone else. Then decades later they leave and you start to have to remember you were just these happy people in the middle of a fight you didn't start and didn't care about but everyone got raped, murdered or tortured in the meantime.

The goal scored by Salah could have been scored by anyone, he just happened to be in the right place

Well done performance to keep a clean sheet and gain three valuable points towards chase up the league leader, which I can't see them lose three games! LFC have given too much ground to other team that are above.
The best players were Bradley, Roberson, Szoboszlai and the keeper Mamadashvili he is excellent! The worst player was Wirtz? He is an embarrassment to LFC, he might be the biggest flop in LFC history due to the size of his cost? God help us!
Slot's team need to be counted in the next two big games for this week. Good Luck

It’s funny how the best goalscorers invariably seem to be in the right place more than anyone else.
I actually don't see it as a tap in or open goal. The self belief & technique in taking it first time was impressive and he steered it into a spot where the keeper had no chance. The ball came to him one side of the defender and he sent it back the other side. It wasn't an easy opportunity in my view

Edit: just looked it up to "prove" my point ... it was an xG of 0.72, which just goes to prove I am talking bollocks, Oh well

Or XG is a load of bollox!

Not sure where you got the info from but Sofa Score had it as 0.52 shot on target, 0.10 xG.
It wasn't an easy chance, taken first time on the weaker foot, narrow opening to slot through.
I'd still expect an in-form Salah to score it every time though.
That said, I think xG is only really of any use when you're looking at a larger sample, individual stats can be far too subjective.

This, is the thing. Mama is never going to be Alisson. It would be nice if he even reached 80% of his level, but that's unfair to expect. Alisson is fucking sensational, so any other keeper was always going to struggle in comparisons

I feel fans are going to make the same mistake they made with Diaz with Mama. Diaz was no Mane but a brilliant player in his own right. Allison is too high of a bar. Six months to a year and Mama can develop into an excellent PL goalkeeper.

The irony of this post 🙂

I got it from where I get everything these days - Copilot. Based on the fact Copilot tricked me into listing Ruben Amorim as manager of Sporting two days ago, I should really have learned my lesson. It's just yet another proof point that I'm a bit of a twat.
