Match Thread EPL - Bournemouth (H) - Friday 20:00

Pretty poor on Wirtz there as expected given the attitude towards the signing.
He covered the second most ground after Szobo, created the second most chances and could have scored and assisted a goal.
Lost the ball 3 times but misplaced more passes then normal.
All in all a decent debut while he gets used to the pace of the PL. The individual quality is there, as we saw at Wembley, and he was just about everywhere last night.
Nerves, frantic pace etc. No issue with him whatsoever. An absolute star in the making for us.

The lightweight comments are just stupid in all honesty. You can se that he isn’t in that category. He won 3/8 ground duels. Has to improve in that area but that will come as he gets used to the pace and intensity.

The only thing pretty poor was Wirtz. I said I expect him to improve but he was poor in this game which pretty much everyone bar you seems to have seen.

It’s only you who said he «stunk the place out».
Which is obviously not true if you actually watched the match.

The thing that concerned me over it individual play was our balance and shape, especially off the ball.

Our weakness is that we can be overloaded down either flank easily. Last season Dom was very good at adding a body to the cause with Gravy & Macca doing the work that Slot doesn’t ask our wingers to do. This then leaves gaps in the box as we have less markers.

With Wirtz in the side we have more naturally attacking AM, and so i feel we need to work out how we deal better with being hit down the flanks.

I’m not usually worried about us being hit on the counter, but the two yesterday both came after we subbed two rapid full backs for arguably our two slowest players. Gomez on for Frimpong would have made sense, and maybe his speed at the back might have helped on that first goal.

Both counter attacks came from half arsed passing in the final third too, which is something we did a lot last year too. No intensity and focus.

All in all - two things that wound me up no end last year were on display again

1. We go into games assuming we’ll get 20 chances and it feels like we just waste too many opportunities through lack of true “i must score this” mindset

2. Our opponents know our weaknesses and we aren’t yet addressing them. It’s going to be a season of vibes and high energy games. I can’t see many teams letting us dictate the play as they can see we are easily rattled

We’re far to easy to hit on the break without Gravy in the side. But the amount of chances we give away from poor attacking choices in the oppositions half/final third is a bit mad.
It was a cut back from Salah to Dom that led to the 2-2 goal. We’d just overloaded with players and no balance whatsoever. So unnecessary at 2-1. Good thing is that it’s something we can adjust.

There is a need for an upgrade on Endo as a back up for Gravy, but that won’t happen until next summer.

That was one wild ride. We saw the good, the bad and the ugly.

The ugly

Slots subs. He must’ve had too much acid over the summer. Thinking Endo or Slobby could do a job at right back and then 10 minutes remember there was a player who has actually racked up a fair amount of appearances in the position. Frimpong was also having a good game too, no reason to take him off.

The breaks for both their goals came from us fucking about with the ball or misplacing an easy pass.

The bad

Konate is giving off Trent last season vibes. He needs to have a word with himself or go now. Even if it’s for a nominal fee which goes to Guehi.

Kerkez. Rash challenges, letting his man goal side and basically all over the place. Probably lucky to not get two yellows and rightfully subbed.

Lack of control. That was like the wild times under Klopp. 2-1 up and having 8 players ahead of the ball was madness.

Wirtz. He seemed ok dealing with the first man and never expected the second man to be right on him. He needs to realise the pace of the game here is levels above what he is used to. I was happy to see him getting to the edge of the box on occasions.

Our counter attacks since prime mane left us have been mostly shite. It continued last night.

The good

EkiTEKKERS. Man is gonna be a star. Even with his pot noodle head. Pace, power, touch, control and can even speak in English.

The attitude to go win it. Sign of champions.

I’m made up for Chiesa. I bet he was so buzzing he could manage an erection even looking at his wife.

The gold badge on the sleeve looks sexy as fuck.

We don’t seem to recover from a poor giveaway at all. I still can’t believe the sight of Semenyo running with the ball but also, in the same process, pursuing Konaté and van Dijk towards our goal. How mad was that?

Everything is coming up @Dreambeliever right now.

Wirtz very lightweight

We're lucky not be losing. Disjointed sloppy mess.

Wirtz very disappointing so far.

wirtz is borderline stinking the place out here

Fantastic from Ekitike who’s looked our best player

Wirtz looks a bit shell-shocked with the physicality of the league
Wirtz's been rubbish since the 10th min.

There I have said what everyone has been thinking.
You were saying?

My observations from last night. Konate absolutely abysmal, reminds me of a right footed Sakho, just doesnt look comfortable with the ball at all, out of position numerous times, get rid before contract expires and bring in Ghehi, his head has clearly turned.

Wirtz well off the pace, Szob bang average, too inconsistent for me.

I cannot for the life of me understand why Frimpong was replaced and why Endo came on at right back, we clearly needed pace on that side and more support from the midfield. Gomez should of been the replacement. Endo was also too far up field for a defensive player for both goals.

Its shocking how easy we are to exploit on the counter. If this isn't addressed with the players we have then our lack of bringing in more defensively minded midfielders will be our downfall this season.

Wirtz was shit. He gets a pass for a few week though because he’s new to this league. He looked bewildered at times at how quickly he got closed down. I am fairly confident that when he adapts to the speed of the game we will start to see the best of him.

I can’t believe some of the criticism of Szobozlai on here, he was quite clearly our 2nd best performer on the night. He energised our performance, he augmented the attack, supported the defence and moved the ball quickly. He made one bad mistake which led to a goal but aside from that he was great.

Could argue Szob was at fault for the 2nd goal too. Looks a bit harsh that though after watching the replay, looks more like a crap pass from Salah to blame rather than a stetch/slip.

Szobo's flick was shit and so was Salah's pass. But that's okay not everything a player tries is going to come off (from memory they weren't done in dangerous positions).

What's not okay is having the entire team caught on the back foot, out of position and unable to cover a counter-attack in any way, shape or form.

As said in another thread, before I get mad at individual players, I would like to see Slot and co sort out a very very obvious problem with the shape of the team and whatever tactics they're employing. If they are working towards something, we're not ready yet and it would be better done in stages. As things stand, we are going to drop points.

That's what Slot said about Gomez: “Then you could argue ‘why don’t you play Joe Gomez there?’, but he only had two sessions in pre-season so he wasn’t able to play half an hour, so we started with Wata.”

Yeah, I thought the same last night but we instantly looked better with Gomez at right back. If Frimpong missed out against Newcastle then Gomez has to start.

If shit is creating the second most chances and covering the second most ground while having the third most touches, then I’m looking forward to seeing how he’ll do when it’s a decent performance.
I think a typically shit performance is something quite different, but we all view the game differently.

The other part I agree with though. The pace of the game is something that needs adjusting to. Knowing his quality that won’t take long.

Wirtz wasn't even that bad. There was times when he was lightweight (you're not gonna get protection from the refs mate), but his use of the ball was effective and sensible.

Would I have liked more? Absolutely. But it wasnt a bad performance

Szob is getting a worrying case of the Joneses, where he loses possession needlessly in a dangerous area. He offers a lot playing deeper, but other issues are appearing

Sooner grav is back the better

Just finished watching the full game. Some thoughts that might not already have been mentioned... 'cos they're perhaps a bit contrarian... 😀

1. Ekitike's pass for Gakpo's goal being credited as an assist is why football assist stats have to be taken with a heap of salt. Gakpo carried the ball 10m searching for a gap to shoot, taking him past 3 defenders before he could finish. To award an assist there just inflates stats for players.

2. Endo -- I don't think he was any better or poorer than Frimpong in his short stint at RB. I think he got caught out of position once. Frimpong got caught out a few times as well and a couple of times, his lack of size proved a bit problematic against his opponent. That's the risk we knew when we got a small fullback, and this game showed it on a couple of occasions.

Back on Endo -- tough luck on the first goal and I hope nobody's pinning the blame on him because the attack came down his side. He'd just made a good pressing play broken up an attack initiated by Tavernier, then played a short pass to Salah and pushed forward calling for the return ball on the overlap. Salah opted to use Szoboszlai instead, and when possession was conceded, Endo was too far ahead in the wrong direction to recover anymore. Just an unfortunate break for him IMO.

Credit Slot though for the quick adjustment to bring on Gomez and shift Endo back in his natural position. Gomez was solid in his minutes; good to see him back.

3. Jones -- I'm not his biggest fan, but credit where credit is due, off the ball, he's quite adept at attacking the box or providing supporting runs when we're on the attack. I don't know if he got the touch leading to the first goal, but I believe his surge into the box caused confusion and/or panic in the Bournemouth backline that led to Chiesa's lovely lovely finish. Jones was at it on the overlap, attacking space again when Salah had the ball for the 2nd. I think Jones may have cursed a bit when Salah didn't pass, but then turned to join in the celebrations when Salah applied the neat finish.

If he learned that he should showcase his strengths rather than his flaws more (trying to fight his way out of a trap at the wrong places and wrong times), he'd get a lot more trust and love from the fans. I can only hope.
