Post Match EPL Everton (H) 2-1 - Sat 20th Sept 12:30

It's a win, which is the main thing but another game in which we've found ourselves struggling to string two passes together for at least half the game.

Today it was the derby, we had a midweek game, they were fresher, the weather was a bit shit etc etc etc.

In the end, we'll run out of excuses... well, unless we keep winning, I suppose.

It's perhaps better to be lucky than good. It'd nice to be both though!

This time around I kinda believe the excuse.

We were lucky! Passing and control needs to improve. Last season we looked so comfortable on the ball, not so sure whats happened

Why are we so intent on making every game a fucking cup final for ourselves? If we played a side with a half decent forward today, we drop 2 points.

That last hour was muck.

Only Grav and Kerkez played great throughout, dunno where the rest of them fucked off to after 30-35mins.

Lovely way to start the weekend.

What do we want tomorrow? A draw? Or a City win leaving us 6 points of both them and the Arse?

Lots of cards and suspensions obv.
City win probably is the best option ,as they do look iffy.

Our midfield disappears for periods in games, sometimes very long periods. It happened often last season & it's the same thing this season. There's just nothing there, no control, no shape, no nothing.

MacAllister looks off it so far this season. That 2nd half cameo he was all over the place.

Thought Kerkez was brilliant today. He was there a lot when needed.

For all their possession in the second half, all they did was threaten to do something with it when they were outside the box. Apart from the goal, no real threat actually materialised because we defended the penalty area really well. I thought Bradley showed up in the second half and defended Grealish steadily -- Grealish saw a lot of the ball, but apart from the cross to the far post that led to the goal, didn't really cause a lot of problems. All gas but no pop.

So for all their possession, it was all a lot of rumbling dark clouds but no lightning. For all our sterility in the second half, we still came closer to scoring a couple more than they did.

It seems Macca doesn't have more than 45 minutes a week in him at the moment, he still looks completely unfit. There must be an issue we don't know about because he's been out of the team as soon as we won the title and it's kept him out of the start of pre-season too

Jones and Wirtz weren't any better after coming on either so probably a correct decision to start him anyway

Kerkez could have judged the cross from Grealish a little bit better instead of jumping like a lame duck at a cross he could never reach and taking himself out as a result.

We were as poor in the 2nd half as we were good in the 1st... Our passing was so far off, it was maddening. We try to do the flicky-sexy bullshit too much, at both ends of the pitch, and when it doesn't come off, we invite needless pressure on ourselves. And our midfield simply vanished for long spells, too.

That said, we were still a poor touch or a bad decision from at least one more goal, so I'm not as concerned as I have been... It'll come - The last two games have both been nail-biters in the end, but the signs within the game were both much better than in previous matches.

Gravy was insane. Kerkez was mostly excellent. Virgil and Ibou very solid again. Dom was constant motion, as always, but should have shot first time with his left that time he was in. Oh, and Hugo looks capable of being a flippin' star.

On the minus side, Conor did ok but got lucky a few times. How he wasn't booked needs investigation... Cody was dreadful - When he's not scoring, he offers us nothing, so far this season. Macca was brutal, again. Mo didn't get much of a look, but when he did, he wasted it by not shooting with his right foot.

Bottom line: We've now gotten 3 of our very toughest matches out of the way early, and we'll 3, 5 or 6 points ahead of the arse and 6, 8 or 9 ahead of the cheats by Monday morning... Lovely jubbly.

Next game is the League Cup, right..? Rest EVERYBODY, please Arne.

Yeah I thought that was poor judgment on his part, and it was the only black mark against an otherwise solid performance from him today. Then again, I've seen Robbo do the same last season. Perhaps the somewhat concerning part is that this is the second goal in five league games that a deep cross to the far post has led to a goal because of a Kerkez error. To his credit, he defended a similar ball really well later in the game so kudos to him for that.

He was mostly very good and he probably wouldn't have done alot about that cross regardless but he panicked. It showed his lack of experience and hopefully he will learn (or someone on the coaching staff will pull him aside on it).

BTW, unpopular opinion but... credit where credit's due -- I thought Pickford was solid coming out to sweep up in the second half. A few times we looked like we could've had a goal scoring opportunity when we were on the break and sent a decent pass through, only for him to be there to clear.
