Smicer says he had no idea Kewell was the player who'd take the number when he agreed to swop, but he had no doubts about the decision to switch to number 11.
"The manager asked me on behalf of Harry if I would be against the idea of giving up the number shirt. All I knew was it was a new player and didn't have a clue at the time who it was for," Smicer said.
"I said it was no problem for me because I haven't had too much luck with the number seven since I came to Liverpool. I haven't played the football I expect from myself and have had so many injuries. It was only later I realised it was Harry Kewell who would be wearing it."
Smicer's superstitions may be justified if the pre-season is anything to go by. He hopes his two goals in Bangkok may signal a change in fortune.
"I hope this is going to be a good change for me," he added.
"In a way there's a weight off my shoulders now I'm not the number seven. It's a famous shirt for Liverpool worn by all the great players. I didn't play well with this number, it's as simple as that. Now I wish Harry better luck."
