Post Match EPL Sunderland (A) 0-1 Wednesday February 11th 20:15

it seems like we keep on playing a few bad matches and then on the verge of getting fired, Slot would pull something out of his magic bag to get a surprise win. most people didn't have much hope going into the match. then the performance surprised many. we were so consistent last season, and this season seems like the reverse. there is no such thing as turning the corner this season. every match is a lucky draw.

I think yesterday showed the dressing room haven’t quit on Slot, the lads at least worked hard.

I actually think we played quite well last night, for large parts, and I dont agree with the notion that other teams would have tore us a new one.
We only conceded 2 shots on target and created 4 big chances ourselves with 23 shots. Away to a team that just doesn't lose at home I thought we did brilliantly.
When Endo was stretchered off he had the most tackles and recoveries on the pitch. He was playing well.

As said it was a step forward towards a chance of CL qualification, and nothing else as these are the performances you expect every time.

We were definitely tighter, with Endo defending on the front foot and Konate and Virg being more aggressive, and more balance from Robbo. You can pick holes all over that midfield though.

let's see how the next few matches go. but there are plenty of matches where they look disinterested, slow on ball recovery and standing around waiting for someone else to do something.

Yeah, midfield and wide forwards were an issue. It's difficult to feel positive about things even after a win when we don't really know from one game to the next how we'll play. But we concede too much through the middle of the pitch and are not a threat from wide areas.

Remember what it took to get out of Shawshank. We may be on course!

Woosh?

At the end of the sky there's a golden storm.

Still can’t believe Wata defended that corner standing on either a broken leg or damaged ligaments. What a warrior.

A lot of people seem to be giving him credit for this but I don't get why.

There was no need for any of that. He was down already and play had stopped. He should've stayed down and gotten treatment instead of getting up and potentially doing himself more damage.

Also, in the next passage of play, the ball was pinging around in our box for a couple mins and we could've conceded whilst he was hobbling about.

Most likely because of adrenaline and a desire to play on without knowing the damage yet.
But sure let’s use it as a stick to beat one of the few players that actually step up every time he’s involved.
Its the common theme for everything regardless of win/draw/lose these days.

I think we can realistically say that two from Jones, Gakpo and Macca could leave in the Summer. Gravenberch will be ok, but he needs a presence alongside him. Salah will likely go too, so there's a real overhaul needed really if you consider we need one or two wide attackers, a robust midfielder, a centre half and cover in the fullback areas. It's all to do, and that's where we'll be vulnerable for the rest of the season now.

I hope Ekitike does nothing but head the ball in training all day every day from now on. This kids footy ban looks like it's found it's symptoms playing out on the pitch now.
Those two headers against City and Sunderland were near identical, which is mad because he's scored a few decent headers too. He's young, we'll have to take the rough with the smooth a bit, but he's going to be fantastic if he keeps progressing. He's got that confidence and swagger too, which hopefully Slot won't bore out of him.

I’ll give him a pass for the City one due to the spin on the ball which made it a lot harder. Last night’s one was just shit.

Once again though, the subs not being ready could have cost us. It seems so fucking lazy from the bench. He's not the type of player to go down like that and stay down; why the fuck wouldn't you just get the sub done there and then

Endo wanting to play on us admirable, but where the fuck is the duty of care from the bench?

It's not a stick to beat him with. For his sake more than anything, it was dumb.

Either way, I don't really give a shit.

i find the lack of 'coordination' between our front 3 so frustrating at times.
the team is still fighting, which is most important as 4th (or higher) is doable if the team just does its job. we're good enough to beat most, if not all teams. Just gotta play football and stop with so many mistakes.
it's a start - unconvincing at times, but every marathon starts with a step.

It’s not just them but the midfield too. There are no real patterns of play. It’s me, to you, me, to you. Seems there is no plan to get through the opponent with passing and moving.

The fuck can't he just praise the defence, rather than effectvely go "ibous got mistakes in him, so tonight was a surprise"

Agreed. There was a passage of play in the second half were Gakpo ran into Ekitike instead of getting into a better position.
The Wirtz - Ekitike combo is very promising though.
