Post Match EPL Sunderland (H) 1-1 Wednesday 3rd Dec - 20:15

Grav is great when things are all peachy, he had to transform his game in no time and often became the creme de la creme. He hasn't hit those dizzy heights of last season prior to winning the league but he's certainly far from being one of our poorer performers, I still think his Atleti display is the best individual display I've seen of any Liverpool player this season.

But there are times, like the past few months, when you need something different stylistically to get you through when plan A is faultering. Who is our no nonsense shithouse that just wants to tackle anyone in sight and get in the way of anything.
I need to update it for the last few games, but he’s second in the POTS count.

We used to talk about Lallana and Firmino leading the press and hunting in packs. Nowadays we have Isak strolling near the defender with the ball, and Wirtz attempting to cut off nearby passing channels alone while 8 other blokes maintain an absurd mid block (haha, I jest - it doesn't block anything).

Our attack looks clueless but I'm more worried about the defensive shape - no defence like that is going to win any title.

That is insulting to every single fan in the ground and watching on tv. Taking the absolute piss out of us.
Pressing comes only when you're out of possession and since that was a ratio of circa 2:1 in our favour you need to multiple our lads' pressures by 2 (or half Sunderland's) to get a truer picture.

Not really because they don’t need to press when van Dijk and Konate are playing to me to you for a lot of the time. They pressed us when we went forward. We didn’t even try to press them and push them back out of possession.

Maybe a more 'defensively minded' DM then push Gravy in alongside Szobo and drop Macca. However I do feel Macca has the most bite of any of our MFs so I'm not sure if we'd be gaining at DM and losing it further forward if we did that.

Possibly just getting Gravy to sit more instead of being such an attack minded DM would help (not curbing his turns and pushes into MF/edge of the box too much though).
People were making fun of Arsenal in having a defensive minded team and then buying Zubamendi on top of what they already had. So far it's worked out for them. Admittedly Zuba probably replacing Partey, but still they didn't go down the let's convert one of our 8s into a DM like we do strategy.

We don't need 3 DMs in our midfield, we just need one "I love pressing and tackling the fuck out of others" type midfielder that can help with 1. covering for the back line and 2. stop/limit the other teams running InterCity 125 trains through us constantly as is happening now.

I know decent modern DM are in sparse availability but surely if we can afford to spend 100m on two attacking players there got to be at least one decent modern DM or there for us.

What's that got to do with the price of bread? You were going on about Sunderland's chances and how their xG must have been higher (ours was x3 more). Still nowhere near enough because absolutely we didn't (don't) make enough clear cut chances, but let's at least get the facts straight.

Because your implication was that they were lucky to score their flukey deflected goal, whereas we deserved ours. We didn't. Had Wirtz' shot not been deflected, we would've lost. If we can bemoan their speculative deflected effort, we have to say the same about ours.

Our xG was higher because we had more shots. Not because of the quality of shots/chances.

Yes and more shots means a greater chance of scoring. xG of 0.1 x 10 chances on average = a goal.
But even a 40 yard Gakpo spanner of a shot will have an xG. If he has ten of them, then cumulatively it will look like we might have had a decent chance. But in reality, we've just watched a mong try something ten times he's not capable of accomplishing.

This is why xg is shite for 90 minutes.

Id rather have 2 0.6xg efforts than 10 0.12xg efforts

We're shite at creating decent chances

Haha well that's how xG averages work - even a mong is going to net one eventually !
