Eric Dier and abuse of players

So Eric Dier has been handed a four-match ban, which will be a huge relief to the fans attending Tottenham's next four games.

It amazes me that more players don't lose their shit with the level of abuse given from the stands. I was even sympathetic towards Cantona back in the day (until the seagulls / trawler thing, at which point I was glad to see the back of him for a few months).

How far is too far?

I'm willing to take his place if he wants, 50grand a week for 2x 90mins of abuse a week, for the next 4 or 5yrs. I wont need a social media account or anything, I'll just turn up to the games in a Ferrari, then the fans can give me shit for 90mins, and I'll play terrible. They wont be able to tell the difference. And I'll walk away from it with 15mill in the bank.

Easy attitude to have but I don't think just because they make loads of money that any and all levels of abuse are ok. If remember the Dier one correctly somebody was giving his brother a load of shit. That's not on although he shouldn't be climbing into the stands. It's hard to know where the line is though.

On the subject of player-fan confrontations, my enduring memory is of Pakistani cricketer Inzamam ul-Haq walking into the stands in Toronto in 1997, bat in hand, to confront an Indian fan who had called him a 'potato'. 😀
My sympathies at the time lay with Inzamam who was otherwise a fairly decent fellow. The press of course slaughtered him.

I do have a lot of sympathy with players who get endless stick from fans and are expected to just suck it up.

I'd like to see more of this kind of thing. The Cantona one was boss. So was that other manc on loan in Belgium.
The one you need to watch, if you haven't already, is the famous Pacers-Pistons brawl in 2004 in Detroit - the Malice at the Palace.

That's the scariest player-fan interaction I've seen. Ron Artest (6'7 and bona fide thug), Stephen Jackson (6'8 ) and Jermaine O'Neal (6'11) deciding to take a swing at fans who threw beer on them. Those fans are lucky to be alive, because if they'd landed, they'd have been going home on a slab.

I went to all boys schools for primary and secondary education. 14 years of all boys schools. There's literally nothing that could phase me when it comes to abuse. I would happily get abused for the money he's on... I would probably end up enjoying the abuse.

Athens, after each match:

A potato?

You've got black guys dying from the old bill kneeling on their necks, people having to use food banks, and back in the day 16yr old lads having to get into icy water at Dunkirk. Then you have a guy on 50grand a week moaning that he's getting a bit of abuse now and then whilst playing football. Fuck him. Far more important issues to deal with in the world, this can be right down the list next to the cats that shit in my garden.

Probably the most wrong answer anyone can give.

It's context and perspective. That's too simplistic a viewpoint to have.

If you've been shielded and lived the footballer lifestyle since a child, they've got no concept of the hardships of the ordinary person. It's like me telling you you can never moan or complain about anything because there are homeless kids starving in Africa so get over it.

Bullshit. Why should we normalise the shit morons aim at players? So the amount of verbal bile you can fire at somebody depends on how much they make? Is it as important as the issues above? No, but it's an easy enough one to solve.

If you go see some mega rich musician do you have the right to continually roar personal abuse at him/her just because they're loaded? It was great when Cantona flattened that moron years ago. It was great when those basketball players did it too (think it happened twice in basketball).

It's not quite the same thing. Unless it was a battle of the bands or something...

Or Eurovision, you can go there and throw stuff at the nationality that you hate the most. I would watch it if that was the case.
