Florian and the (Slot) Machine

I used to manage Bumper the odd time. It was part of the company's portfolio so had to cover it occasionally. The council handing out later and later licences in town at the same time as the death of bands/indie/rock was taking place scuppered it. There wasn't much we could do to hold it.

Shame.

It's really a shame.

From the photos I seem to have loved it.

I don't get this protracted way of doing shit. Does it really happen this way @Beamrider? I mean I dunno I've never batted at this level before but most of the major deals I've ever done in my life have been sat down with someone, usually in a pub. The offer and counter offer, is this an email or a convo or what?

Agreed. Is it in our interest for all this to be out there? Seems wierd these offers and rejections are public knowledge. Just piles pressure on us.

Now we are all excited over him, but there's nothing agreed at all, just this posturing. We're led to believe anyway...

Surely this is all in Leverkusens interest?

If a bid was rejected for that amount, it's likely that they just need to work out the add-ons, payments, etc. It's the deal as constructed is rejected. Not that we're going to sign him anyway.

The negotiations will typically be verbal with follow-up emails to formalise everything (and the wording of those emails will then typically form the basis of the formal agreement). As far as paperwork is concerned, the player contract is usually the time-consuming thing but it sounds like that's already done. The transfer agreement is usually only a couple of pages, but then it's usually a fixed fee with limited contingencies etc. In this case, the payment structure and triggers are likely to be messy and it will take time to agree those and then agree wording that suits both parties (bearing in mind that Leverkusen will also be working in a second language, and as silly as it sounds, that was what tripped up Pere Guardiola when he was acting for Suarez on the £40m + £1 (non) release clause). So Leverkusen will be understandably cautious.
To be honest, my surprise with transfer deals was always how quickly they got done. Prior to working at the club my background was M&A and businesses making investments at this kind of value would take months to do it, and the board of directors would have to sign off. In football transfers it can be done in a matter of days. In truth, the complexity of the deals is much less than an M&A deal, but the risk is comparable.
As far as this deal is concerned, there's probably a few factors as to why it (seems to be) taking longer:
1. It probably went public earlier in the process than we might be used to with other deals - the process itself may not be taking that much longer than normal, we just found out earlier because there were other interested parties, so it feels like it's dragging on when it's probably not, relatively speaking.
2. It's a big transaction with lots of risk, so there will be a lot of parties involved and we'll be trying to reduce our exposure by including more contingencies in the fee. I don't know whether Michael Edwards has the same level of authority as Mike Gordon did in terms of waving things through as opposed to having to consult with the senior FSG guys.
3. There isn't really a rush. I'm sure the club wants it done, as do we, but we're not up against any deadlines so there isn't the urgency of a deadline day deal or one where there's a limited window for a release clause. So we'll take our time and do it thoroughly.
4. Odd as it seems, a lot of people at the club fuck off on holiday as soon as the season ends, so whilst they'll be on call, they won't be working at top speed / efficiency.
5. It's entirely possible we've got other deals going on in parallel which are taking up the team's time.
6. I was told the mood in Chapel Street this week has been "sombre" after last Sunday, and that's probably taken its toll on people's time and morale. They will also want to make a big splash announcing this one, so need to put some distance between the parade and the announcement.

And just to give some historic context:
The Suarez / Carroll / Torres window was before my time at the club but apparently we had to have three separate teams, focusing on one deal each because of how much work they needed to do. Carroll and Torres were obviously done very quickly and it's fair to say that there were some "pragmatic" decisions on at least one of those deals whereby things would have been done differently if we'd had the time.
By contrast, the Keita deal dragged on forever because it was so messy, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic (shudders) too. It's often the case that in some deals players / agents will want something which is do'able in the country they're leaving but not allowed under FA rules and then we all have to go around the houses finding a way of giving them substantially the same thing in a different form. And often the problem was that the footballing guys (i.e. the Richard Hughes role) weren't always on top of the rules and would agree to something that we then couldn't deliver.
And the ones that took all the time always turned out to be shite.

No. My mates did. My memory is foggy but I think the dude that organised the techno lineup when they started that kinda thing thought I was a prick. Probably had good reason.
Was never really into the techno scene but the bowlers set up was awesome.
