It is clear that Liverpool are making a pitch to Wirtz to join head coach Arne Slot’s title-winning squad and trying to persuade him to opt for a new challenge away from his homeland. Wirtz could also stay at Leverkusen for another season.
He has previously said that his career will be shaped by the chance to stock his trophy cabinet rather than boosting his bank balance,
telling Sports Illustrated earlier this month: “The sporting perspective is much more important than money. My parents would be angry if I ever gave money priority.”
Adding to the intrigue are comments from Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness claiming that Wirtz “was at Liverpool” last week when he purported to be meeting City. Liverpool have said a meeting did not take place.
The withdrawal of City raises the prospect of a straight fight between Bayern and Liverpool should Wirtz decide against staying at Leverkusen for another season.
City pulled out of the race to sign Wirtz after claiming that the total financial package, including wages and transfer fees, would amount to around £250million.
They have taken similar stances before during the Pep Guardiola era, such as with Alexis Sánchez, Frenkie de Jong and Kalidou Koulibaly, because the club deemed their demands to be too steep. Deals for Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish were sanctioned.
It does mean, however, that City have failed to land Guardiola’s top transfer target this summer, having just spent around £180 million on four players — Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, Nico González — in the January transfer window. The Catalan viewed Wirtz as the successor to Kevin De Bruyne and made it clear at the start of the campaign that they were interested in him.
City will now turn to their other targets, including Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest and AC Milan’s Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, who is available for around £55million this summer.
There is hope internally, too, that Phil Foden will bounce back from a tough season and start performing near his best again next year. Guardiola remains a big fan of the 24-year-old England international.
