I don't think you can pin it on Wirtz or Kerkez, the newbies that were selected. You have to look at the set up and how they were being used.

We had 2 cut in merchants, who were completely out of form and failing to create much, convert much, defend much or even hold onto the ball.

Hard for Wirtz (or Kerkez) to shine in these circumstances.

Whilst i partly blame Gakpo and Salah (they did my nut in) i mainly blame Slot for not quickly finding a way to make it work. At the very least he should have dropped both much earlier than he did.

We see now, that although we're not exactly purring, without (the current iterations of) Gakpo and Salah we're getting better performances and results.
 
We are out of the title race because we have conceded something like 20 goals more than Arse. In fact we have been since Feb, conceding more goals. It would be perfectly convenient to have a single player as scape goat but it’s not true. It’s down to our manager to sort this.
 
I understood selling quansah if the plan was leoni and Guehi in the summer.

We front loaded our sales, meaning we were always playing catch up and any delays/issues with other clubs would fuck us over
 
It also explains his early season struggles. He's been gaining mass and adapting to how to play in his new slightly less frail form.

He'll be a star. Just a shame it took some time to start

the difference with VVD is, he still leads stats across Europe in a very important area for CBs, his heading dominance. Salah leads only in possession lost.
We can still get years out of VVD if he had a top class intelligent CB as his partner. Konate is just all over the place and continues to show low footballing IQ.

Fair. I should have said "based on our current squad". Obviously if we buy a pacey left winger with tricks and a willingness to include the overlapping fullback, then i'm all for wirtz moving central again

funny i was talking to an acquaintance earlier who was a pro footballer for a while back in the late 80’s, he reckons virgil is done too. best pl cb ever but his time is up.

what’s one of the ideal scenarios when replacing the best? it’s having a young lad with all the tools training alongside and learning everything from him. we had that and we sold him because he’s a shagger. that’s another black mark on arne imo.

Confidence and the feeling you need to force things can be detrimental to even Salahs confidence.

Ultimately it’s on Slot for trying to force a change too quickly with players that were always going to need time to adjust. It’s cost us the league this season, but hopefully thats it.

i did like his lefties comment, i might be inferring way too much but it felt like it said a lot

anyway i distinctly remember itk/journalist types openly saying the plan was to sell gakpo this summer even before diaz left. 27 at the start of next season, i think this is as good as cody gets. i think i’ve said plenty of times that im not overly keen on him but the squad needs to stabilise at some stage, not even sure who’d pay decent money for him either.

Gakpo is worth quite a lot. He regularly score goals. He often drives us crazy, but we will definitely make a profit on him.
