General UK politics

They took the hit straight away with the winter fuel allowance stuff. That’ll be one of the most unpopular policies.

Then once badenoch starts chatting shit they’ll lose more voters.

An acquaintance of mine who's quite senior in the local constituency Conservative Association reckons Cleverly was the only candidate worth voting for in their leadership election. In her view Badenoch will make a good first impression but it's anyone's guess how things will go from there, as Badenoch is tough but not as clever as she herself thinks she is.

The question then is, how did they let Shapps run the Cleverly campaign?
Cleverly was miles ahead, and seems they offered someone else their votes in a game of strategy that backfired.

Some of the media coverage after Cleverly was voted out of the race suggested that he wasn't genuinely far ahead at all, and that quite a few votes which were promised to him before the ballot which knocked him out were never actually going to come his way. Maybe that's what prompted the kind of decisions you describe.

Gonna be interesting to see who Badenoch now fetches into the Shadow Cabinet. Given the number of Tory MPs who either resigned before the last election or were defeated in it, and the fact that she beat most of the other remaining big hitters to get the leadership, she may find herself with quite a small pool to fish in.

Those leadership contests they have really do bring out the cloak and daggers of politics. It's intriguing but also a bit miserable at the same time.

The plan was clearly to get unpopular stuff done quickly and blame it all on the Tories.

The second part of that hasn't worked out as well as they would have hoped, as not enough people believed the black hole stuff and Labour overestimated how popular they are.

They have also handled their media extraordinarily poorly on various other issues.

That said, they will definitely recover. The extent will be determined by the impact of the unpopular things, which we won't quite see for a little while.

I suspect that it picks itself to a degree.

She will offer jobs to the five who lost, and some will accept if only to show unity for a while, whereas others won't, such as Cleverly.

A few other current Shadow Cabinet members will quit (Hunt and probably Dowden).

She'll have promised a few positions to her supporters. She'll have to fulfill those.

Beyond that, she'll have to keep a lot of the current Shadow Cabinet for a while as she won't want to instantly create a new awkward squad on the backbenches.

Any positions left, she'll have to balance right and left and who is better to keep onside vs not wanting to be associated with. Examples, the likes of Braverman and Williamson.

The problems obviously come when people quit etc, which they always do. That is when the lack of people becomes an issue.

Yeah I saw that.
My favourite thing he tweets is hows hes actually still in the centre re politics, it's just that the left have moved so far left that he's now on the 'right'
before retweeting right wing pieces.

I hadn't opened twitter for ages but wanted the lowdown on these contract talks. Had two notifications, both for tweets from him that I might be interested in. I've blocked him ages ago. Such a bin fire that place now.

My notifications are usually that I'm now being followd by some bot.

Usually porn bots follow me, which is exciting
These must be porn bots too but they're pretty boring... unless I'm being followed by vanilla porn bots. I must spice up my search history.

Would they be in with a majority if the previous Tory Gov hadn't made a shit show for 13yrs? What is the alternative?

How do we rate the performance of the new Labour Government?
Fuck knows because the media keep going on about other shit ignoring some of the positives.

I’m all for means tested benefits with the WFA. Same for changing inheritance tax. They didn’t go far enough in the budget for my liking.

Them not renewing train contracts is another positive.

I’m not happy with their approach to Israel but that’s a dodgy subject anyway.

They are in for a major shit show with the Wotsit in the White House.

In a similar vein to the distractions in the other thread.
The discussions about purchasing knives online etc is almost a distraction for the evil of the Southport killer.

He stabbed a 6 and a 7 year old more than 200 times.
Next level of unhinged, but he fell through the gaps multiple times.

Same thing happens opposite direction and those that come here don’t get the safety net we have.

There isn't really a national insurance contribution in India like the UK.
I'd imagine it's negligible if there is a co tributing

Wiki says it does.

What has happened is the usual screaming like a banshee over a minuscule thing. This is an incentive to get skilled workers to come to the UK, who still have to go through the usual hoops to work here. It’s for those staying less than 3 years. They won’t get a state pension, have to pay for NHS treatment and cannot claim benefits.

I’m not agreeing with the NI policy, it’s the whole media faux outrage over it. It was apparently set up by the Tories too.

Where’s the outrage for NI relief for workers in Freeport’s and Investment Zones??????????? Two tier taxation being screamed about by the wealthy elite. The hypocrisy.

Some are only pissed off because it’s brown people getting the relief when there are schemes open to UK people and businesses which they don’t give two fucks about.

Over 700k Indians have migrated to uk since 2021.
Both work and student.
How many left etc I dunno.

I'd really like a breakdown of the types of work the 'skilled workers' are doing to better understand this.

You’d have to extrapolate those who are actually working, ignoring family and students.

They have to go through the points based system.

Most people wanting to work in the UK still have to apply for a visa through the points-based system (PBS).
But since 11 April 2024, they have needed a job offer with a higher salary.
Applicants have to earn at least £38,700 - an increase of nearly 50% from the previous £26,200 minimum.
The threshold does not apply to some jobs - such as in health and social care, and teachers on national pay scales.
